Has anyone tried those new cylinder heads that seem very affordable? Are they Chinese knockoffs? Are they any good? Thanks.

If you search on this board for the vendor's name you'll find quite a few conversations.... probably quicker than opening this can of worms... again !!
Same trick will work on the Diesel forum on VWVortex.

My TDI head has been good so far, but I can't say either way for my IDI head. Something failed, but I can't say if it was the head or piston, but the head ended up worthless.

No worries... my suggestion was really about saving you time, since you should be able to dig up a whack of conversations quickly.
Personally I'm a disinterested bystander !!

I'm ordering one of "those heads" shortly. It seems the only affordable alternative for those wanting to keep their diesel and doesn't have thousands to spend on OEM/or equiv. parts.

I got a head manufactured by TopLine, it was complete ready to bolt on. I had to drill out the boss for the alt. bracket. Got about 600 miles on it. Also have TopLine engine bearings installed. So far so good.

I bought a new 1.9 cylinder kopf and some other diesel krap from these guys:
Ebay Store:
vwmotorsWeb Page:
Quality German Auto PartsThey claimed the zylinder kopf was made in Europe off of the same tooling used for the production units sent to VW.

If it came down to scrapping my car or buying a chinese head, that chinese head would be on there in a hurry.
Really though, I would much prefer a used OEM head with cracks between the valves

Bought one off E-Bay and since his other stuff was Chinese maybe this one is too. Nonetheless, I put my old guts in it and it seems OK. This was the 1.6 IDI turbo hydraulic application. Runs like crap though. Everything is dead nuts with new injectors too but compression is 265psi and starting is holy hell. What I have noticed (when it does run) is that the temperature really rises under heavy boost ( I installed an oil cooler to no avail).
One word of advise is to grind the seats. They are just thrown in and will not seal.
Refer to "destroy all lifters" for more fun with this engine.

Do you have a mechanical or hydraulic 1.6 head?
