Trouble is my middle name

50 miles from nowhere in Utah, driving down the road towards the Needles District, and my wife says she smells coolant. I look down and the temp gauge is WAY past 250, pegged!!! I pull over, open the hood and notice the rad is cold. I turn the engine off, crawl underneath to have a look at things, and notice the fan belt hanging. Hmmm, wonder why that happened, but at least it's an easy fix. WRONG!!! The harmonic balancer is gone along with the water pump pulley!!! I spent 4 hours letting it cool down, driving until it got hot, and repeating until I got a fellow Rover owner to pull me to town. Everyone told me about the huge "VW graveyard", so when a friend lent me his Jeep, I drove over. No diesels, as someone from Salt Lake bought them all, and he didn't even think he had any gasser blocks other than the multitude of air cooled vehicles he had. After making my way through the maze of vehicles, I finally found a block sitting inside a bus that had crank pulleys. I had to go back and find more spacers (on the only Audi, burried in the far corner)later to get the alignment closer. I was only able to get one of the 3 broken bolts out(one was completely gone) so I put it together with two bolts, which luckily were opposite each other. I drove a little bit, but got a ride back to Colo in someone's trailer, then drove a short ways home. I hope I still have my old balancer.

Dang dude. That's really bad luck. Hopefully you didn't damage the motor.

How does your wife like the truck?

I'm thinking one bolt came out as there were only 3 broken ones. Maybe the rest were loose. I think I am never putting another bolt in that engine without locktite again!!. Hopefully I didn't throw my old balancer away. Luckily my WP pulley landed on my oil cooler lines, so I still have it.
And from before it broke, but after my axle broke(I know, more "luck")
some video.

I was thinking about it, but I had no line where I was. No cell at all, and was camping, so no computer or internet.
