Author Topic: AAZ sudden BIG oil leak overnight (Read 5002 times)

hey guy's, i'm hoping someone can offer suggestions about htis problem i have:

I have a '94 1.9TD golf (aaz) with k14 turned up to about 17psi and a few little pump tweaks. its my daily driver, i do about 1000km a week.

yesterday night missus and i went to sydney from home here (about 75km's to see a show in the city.... and this morning i come out to find oil spots all over the back of the car... im thinking its come out of the exhaust (2.5" straight through) and i have a turbo oil seal leak - but when i rolled the car back theres a pool of oil on the ground underneath. lots of oil down the back of the block, covered the crossmember and dripping off.... i suppose on the freeway it was just blowing underneath the car and then sticking to the back. - i didnt notice any extra smoke than normal.

last night on the drive engine temps were always normal, boost never went over 17psi. oil pressure was fine the whole trip, and theres still enough oil in the sump to show about halfway between low and full on the dipstick.

i just put the car on ramps and i cant tell anything - just a lot of oil around the back of the enigne.

any chance this could be a head gasket issue? theres no oil in the coolant and no coolant in the oil, and no coolant leaks.... so i thought its unlikely...

ideas?

Intake boot secured to the turbo (X2) and intake? VC nice and tight? Intake manifold lose? Crack in the turbo oil return line?

Maybe fire it up and climb under it to see where it is leaking. Try pressure washing the back of the block so you can see what is going on

degreased whole engine bay (and underside of the car) just now.

turbo oil line appears intact. turbo hoses fine. intake manifold hasnt been touched - doesn't appear loose but i would have expected to lose some boost pressure if it was loose right?

as soon as my carport floor dries (degreased that too) i'll put it back on the ramps....

turbo oil return banjo fitting was very oily but i havnt ascertained if it is loose yet.

what do you mean by VC?

VC = valve cover

well i found the oil leak - just from the oil pressure switch hole..... off i go for some thread tape :-)

gee what a mess though!

Don't know if that will work. You might break the electrical connection

true.. it uses the metal contact for the ground... maybe if you just use the sealing tape on the one end?

On some sensors I've had good luck starting the teflon tape wrap about 1/4 of the way up the threads... a bit of bare metal to ensure good electrical contact and then sealant the rest of the way. This works for things using tapered pipe threads.

Having said that, the oil pressure sensors have linear threads iirc and are designed to use a thin aluminum or copper sealing ring against the body of the sensor... I usually buy 10 at a time since they are tend to crush and distort and seem to be a one-use-only thing.
