Alright, im sick of going 100km at 3000rpm, ive looked on alot of sites for this ASF, iim not sure how to calculate the ratio's, it says it would be at 3500rpm at 135km, or 84mph at 3500rpm, what would be the difference in my stock tranny now

100km/60mph @3000rpm =stock 1.6td
100km/60mph @ ?????rpm =ASF

can someone finish that for me, also i understand its a bolt in swap, just need to rewire the reverse light, thanks guys.

Go here http://www.scirocco.org/gears/ and put in your tire info etc to get what you need.

I swapped in an ACN which is the same ratio as the ASF your looking at.

Same trans as far as bolting it in goes. the revers lights are a tad tricky but you can get the info for that from brokevw.com.

Be sure to replace the seals while it's out, sucks to have a leak show up AFTER you get it installed, especially if it's one of the input shafts seals.

Alright, I called junkyards but theres no ASF, although there is a 1986 GTI v8 cis, code is ACN, is it the same, bolt up? could i also use the axles along with it?

ASF and ACN are the same thing 8v Valve gasser close ratio transaxles. They were used in 8V GLIs, GTIs, and Carats, and use the same 90MM axles and input shaft splines as the diesel transaxles.

I've swapped an ASF in place of an AVX, I highly recommend it.  

It'll bolts right up, axles are the same so, you can re-use those. The reverse light switch will be different depending on your wiring (CE1 and CE2) if both cars are the same there is nothing you need to do. If they are different you can just swap your original reverse light switch into the ACN. Threads and size are the same threads right into the transaxle case, connector is different between CE1 and CE2 wiring.

With an ASF or ASF you wouldn't hit 3000 RPMs until ~80mph / 130 kph.

I thought the lower final drive would make it sluggish when in city driving, it's not at all.  

As to what to watch out for, make sure you have a high quality 30mm socket and breaker bar (or impact wrench) to get the Axle nuts loose or stop by a shop and have them break them loose. You'll also need a high quality 8MM 12 Point socket for the axle flange bolts. Clean the bolt heads out  with some brake cleaner and a wire brush first and tap the 12 point bit  all the way into the bolt head before your try to loosen the bolts. While you are at it, put new bolts in, especially if the heads of your old ones are even a tiny bit stripped. Parts4VWs has new bolts for $1.00 each.

Just as zukgod1 said, do the seals. I was in a rush to get mine done because I was moving, now I have a seal that seeps..  :( It's a good time to do the clutch too.

Use GM/Penzoil Synchromesh or Redline MTL when you fill it. If you can't get those just make sure whatever lube you use is GL-4 NOT GL-5. GL-5 will corrode parts in an 020 transaxle and it will grind itself to death.
