« on: September 15, 2008, 09:57:37 pm »
ok, after much searching for sticky injector solutions i've found nothing . maybe i suck at this but i have only found people saying "maybe its a stick injector"
ok! So i have two sticky injectors!!! what do i do about this? what does sticky even mean in this context? too high break pressure?

i must fix them because it is so severe it wont start anymore and i smoke an unruly amount not to mention the racket those two cylinders make with the sticky injectors

Your options are new ones, rebuilt ones, or rebuilding them yourself and setting the pop pressure.

Good luck.

Be more specific...
It won't start yet it smokes? Do you mean it's hard to  start?
How do you know its 2 injectors and not 1 or 3 :?

If testequipment is not available, then I'd do this... remove glowplug power.  reverse fuel lines on pump so that they point up in the air. reattach injectors and get someone to crank for a few seconds whilst you watch from a safe distance... Cover some of them with cloth if  wary

Pull your injectors and look at the tips.  See if they all look the same.  Find a diesel shop and ask them to check to pop pressure and spray pattern, that should be very cheap.  They will either be correct or off.  If they dribble fuel out and dont seal well you will start to melt things.  If they are original and have more than 100,000 miles on them you may want to consider having them rebuilt.  Lots of info on that process on the forum.

I already did all that with the injectors less than a month ago.
The nozzles aren't  4 months old; thats the date of rebuild.
they are all within acceptable popping pressures when i checked 3 weeks ago.
I know which ones it is because you can hear it knock with a stethoscope.
I roll it down a hill to start it.
Yes, it smokes tons.
 Grey/white smoke.
 especially on idle.
All the tips looked fine 3 weeks ago.
I notced 1 of them leaks a bit from where they join together in the middle. The rest are bone dry.

Mark(The Miser)UK, thanks for the advice but i aleady know they're getting fuel because i cracked the lines a bit and diesel came out and tons of unburt comes out the tail pipe during cranking. And if anyone ever does that suggestion of turning them upside down and cranking, cover ALLLLL ALL ALL ALL your coolant hoses with tons of towels or paper towel because diesel will EAT them.

any tips other than to get new ones?

Going with the fire fuel and air thought process, look at fire next.  Check all of your glowpugs.  If you get two that are bad it will cause these problems.  Pull them and either check resistance or use some jumper cables to see if they glow cherry red quickly.  If any of the tips look melty, you need to look at that injector again.   If you have the injectors out, you can cycle the glow plugs and look into the head and see if they are working.

Smokey,
Loosen nut on #1 injector line at the injector and raise it slightly . Turn on ignition and check that diesel pulse is indeed on TDC compression stroke [if you have an oil baffle you'll need toremove valve cover to see cam lobes. Other than that , you'll need t oremove injectors and check them again. Ingress of dirt can happen at any time I guess...
The absolutely best cleaner I've found so far is a spray  on oven cleaner. Ancient carbon dissolves in minutes. Rinse with diesel and see how much carbon comes off onto a rag...

i actually like this idea... but yes... stand far far away    this test will prove to be much better than simply checking breaking pressure... this is a real test of how the injectors are performing inside the motor.

and about the new diesel eating coolant hoses, i doubt it... the new stuff that killed my old pump (well not killed, but made leak) was leaking all over my coolant hose going to the oil cooler, and it did that for a good long time-more than a drible too... and i'm still using that coolant hose to this day (that was about 2 years ago)

so old diesel = yes new diesel = very unlikely to eat your coolant hoses

about the diesel:
I see.
maybe it was the cetane booster or something because something ate all my hoses. would coolant do it?

I'll do the oven cleaner thing. they were sooty when i had them pop tested and had only been in there a couple months. I'll do the upside down injector thing when i put the new head on.
The pump i think is way too advanced [hill billy style] and is causing some of the issue.

1 glow plug is out but i don't think that would cause the smoke on idle once it's already hot.

subsonic, what were you saying about looking melty. one of the glow plugs wasn't the same shape it was when i put it in. it once had a taper and now it looks like the round ceramic ones. So you said i need to look at that injector again. look for what?

I'm sorta building a new engine because this one is a piece but it's not very exciting compared to what most people are doing ... maybe i'll make a thread about it.

JTanguay. I understand your concern about diesel pressure. Clarifying:
Unscrew nut fully, push it back over a bend. The fuel line will naturally move away a few mm often as not. No matter either way as the diesel will only come out like a pensioner having a wee   Hand cranking with a wrench will suffice. This is one  piece of advice a neighbour gave me that was useful when I first entered the world of diesel repairs.  A small metered amount of diesel carries no pressure with an unrestricted tube. Only when confined/restricted  will pressure develop.
Smokey,
Sometimes a glowplug will IMO swell of it's own accord , just like a cooker ring or mini grill element.
