1.6 td intake question

Why do some of these intakes have a removable blockoff plate on the front of them?  I have two, one has a blockoff plate, one does not. :?


2009 Jetta TDI Loyal edition, 6-spd. 16V 2.0CR


1985 VW Golf 5-spd, 4-door, 1.6NA  Bought from orig. owner in Savannah with 42,000 miles.
"Making the jump NA to TD" slow but sure.

1980 VW Rabbit LS 5-spd, 4-door 1.6NA almost 450,000miles  RIP

Thanks for the info Andrew.
So the one with the plate can be used on a transverse engine setup.  Did these also come on the standard 1.6TD setup?  VW adapting a part for multivehicle use?

Thanks for the picture.

The 1.6TD did not come with the block off plate. It was not machined for it but it was cast. At least from what I have seen
