Puch used to make a clip-on-the-wheel set up like that at one point WAY back when,...

there is a guy on ebay who sells a complete kit, just add mountain bike for $199 US + ship.

60cc, pull start or pop the clutch. :D

NON-DIESEL SIDE NOTE:

i think i'm buying a clean 2 door GLI today, 1984, and a 2L 16v to go in it  :D

Thread hijack - a light A1 chassis and 2.0 16V is a monster - like my Caddy.

In regards to the small diesel engine, I got nothing.  But I think the Army has finally switched over its motorcycles to diesel in an effort to make averything fill up from the same fuel supply.
Caddy (TD Project), Caddy 1.6D, etc etc.

I remember seeing at our county fair last year a big display of lots of diesel yard equipment.  Some of the engines were pretty small, but I dont think they were as small as 50cc.  I think the smallest one I saw was a yard tiller with self-propelled tracks, it was something like 125cc.  I didnt look very long, and I dont even remember the brand name of the equipment.  Probably not much help- sorry!

haha no problem, thanks for the reply anyway.

i'm thinking more along the lines of electric now... any ideas for an electric 'assistance' motor that would put out similar power to a 49cc?

yep, got the GLI/16v. couldnt resist :)
it may be a monster, but my goal is to make it look as much NOT like a monster as possible. its more fun to catch the mkIV VR twits by surprise. (apologies to any mkIV VR twits that may be reading)

Did someone say 'sleeper'?
This is my all time favourite, better than an old Valiant with a big block

They used to have a couple videos on the site, the thing's gotta be a absolute blast to drive :!:

As for small diesel motors, I don't know of any THAT small.
A huge RC plane motor is close to a diesel, but I don't think they come that big, and they run at like a billion RPM's...

Dig the A1 Jetta!  Those are very rare around where I'm from (Ohio).  Seems like you got a good one in good condition.  I think they look somewhat like the BMW coupes of that era.

More hijacking:  Are you swapping in the stock fuel system or doing something like megasquirt?  It's not too late to ditch all those extra valves and put in a TD!

hijack all you want, i'm a lot more excited about the GLI than the hillbilly 'moped'

they are pretty rare up here too, although we did get 2-dr GLIs and i think the states only for 4-dr. if i ever decide to sell it, i'll probably try to do it by going to some US shows

ya they look like 3-series of that era, but thats ok, those are the bimmers i like.

i'll be putting my TD motor into the caddy... it will be the camping/long-hauling rig so i'd rather it be diesel.

the GLI will be getting a 2L 16v from a '91 passat. full motronic swap. 195-210psi across all cylinders. a little more variance than i'd like but certainly not numbers to turn your nose up at. thats what sealed the deal for the me, the motor. it all came as a 'package'.

can't wait to get working on it.

any suggestions for a floor treatment? its not rotted, but i'd like to strip it down and get a good tough epoxy on there so it never does rot. not from the inside-out anyway.

Sounds like that'll be a fun little rocket... Let me know how the thing works out.  I've got a scirocco style 16V intake and boot if you're interested... that would keep everything on the driver's side like it should be in an A1.

Maybe a good epoxy metal paint like POR-15?  You might have to scrape / chip / freeze off all that nasty undercoating first though.  Not too fun there.

por-15 is what i've been thinking. stripping the floor coating i know all too well about. got 90% of it out of the caddy interior now. not a fun job! angle grinder with steel braided brush works well. too bad princess auto has been out of them for 3 months now and they keep saying "check back next week, we have no idea what we're getting in a given shipment" thanks princess auto, i used to have faith in you, lately you make me want to throw a wrench at the 50 year old lady behind your counter.

Por-15...can that be had in sw Ont? What's it worth?

And for a showing of my ignorance, I presume it's far superior to something like 'Extend'?

Your Princess Auto has little old ladies?
Ours has young nubile shapely flirty females, no wonder I frequent the joint & rarely get out <$100 :P
