1.6 idi to S-10 swap
« on: September 12, 2008, 09:57:42 pm »
Does anyone know how to swap a VW diesel into an '89 S-10. Seems like it could be a good swap. Any info would be helpful.

Did you ever find anything out? I know when I owned an S10 (over 20 years ago) the Nissan engine (5cyl., D5 I think it was) was a hot conversion topic. There must be something out there. I'd be interested in that too.

I've been trying to figure this out for sometime. I need to just figure this out. I've got both vehicles and would love a RWD diesel. I'd rather not use a toyota trans. Just because i would have another model to track different parts for.

Have you thought about a Dasher or Fox transmission?  That way you would have only 2 models to keep track of then.

No, the Dasher, Quantum, and Fox were rear wheel drive/front engine VW's.  You might even be able to find a TD Quantum 5-speed transmission for your S-10.

This ad on the Vortex is of a part out of an '89 Fox and I think he might still have the transmission available.

There are not any factory Front engine, rear wheel drive cars from VW. There are AWD front engine cars. There are Rear engine RWD cars. But the Dasher, Fox and Quantum are all longitudinal FWD cars.

I can verify this, I own one of each.

I remember reading an article (probably 30 years ago) in either "Hotrod" or "Popular Hot Rodding" about a conversion kit to replace a pooched engine in a Vega/Astre with a gas volks engine. THe original engine in these cars was notorious for burning oil by the gallon, aluminum block with no sleeves. (had one, put in a buick V6 instead). Adapter kit hooked the volks engine to the GM saginaw trans....  Probably all bolt into an S10. Don't know who made the kit, (sucks to get old!)but I'd like to. I keep seeing an AAZ in a little blazer in my mind's eye.

I have a T56 and would love 6 gears 2 of them overdrive and a mTDI in an 2wd s-10. Or even just get a T5 and make a 4wd WT. That stand for work truck!
