rally car!!
« on: September 12, 2008, 07:39:00 am »
hey everybody. I have been dreaming up this project fr a few years, but since i dont have money because of school, i figure i should get all my research done before i actually can do what i want :D
Anywho, my plan is very frankenstein, and most TDI guys would call it blasphimy, but it will be sick either way.
I am planning on taking a 2004 kia rio( it looks like a miniature Subaru STI), putting a 1.9 TDi in it, or something easy to get my hands on, and want to make it 4wd.
First, is there an easy 4wd drivetrain that will bolt up to the motor or something that can be done with limited fabrication?
Second, what is the best Stand alone engine management system for a diesel? I want to be able to play with timing etc.

Lastly, i need Horsepower, at least the high 200's, if not 300's msomewhere, but i want to run on veggie oil. Do these 2 mix and what are the best ideas for engine upgrades? In rally i am limited to a 34 mm restricor on the turbo inlet side, but that is not to much of a problem.

I hopefully i will not disappoint, being able to construct this monster sometime in the future.

thanx everyone

Better off finding a Golf Syncro then installing the TD if you want AWD and there are maybe 100 of them in the states?

Good luck finding a AWD system that will fit the KIA unless that car was available as a AWD car across the pond somewhere.

If you want to be able to play with timing your probably going to have to go M-TDI. i suppose you could do a chip etc etc with a computer controlled TDI but with the M you can do what ever you want to it without a laptop.

It sounds like a fun build for sure.  Do you already have the KIA?

Post up a pic.

i also was part of a build with a few other guys of putting an old 323 GTX drivewtrain into and aspire:P made it into an ice racer. so i dont think making the awd sytem fit will be a problem

I don't know of any Subaru drive train that will bolt to a VW engine..?

Maybe though.

Anything is possible if you don't mind cutting allot and welding allot.

Seriously though it sounds fun.

I remember reading somewhere about a VW engined Subi, but they had to have an adapter made. There are adapters for Toy drivetrains, at least for the trucks. I wonder if they would work for a Tercel, as I think they were 4wd, and being rust buckets, shouldn't be that hard to find.

all you need is to make an adaptor plate... easier said than done though... (and other mounts, etc)

do you have a place to do the work yourself, or do you know someone with a machine shop???

There are a number of adapters available to put a Subaru engine on a VW transaxle, but I don't know about the other way.  You say you don't have money due to school, so you would be much better off financially to pick a vehicle that has the engine/trans/drivetrain combo you want, even if it costs more up front.

i understnad that. i am not starting the poject right now or soon. I am waiating for a few years, i just want to get all my homework done first, then get all the parts together little by litle, then build the car. Also, the whole point of making this car is to get noticed. Sure i could go buy any rally car or make jsut a regular Golf rally car, but it is the same as all the others, not something different that will get noticed.[/quote]

Most of the folks I know in Rally would just laugh at a Kia.

Sounds like you're going to be mixing and matching a lot of different manufacturers, and each mixmatch introduces a great deal of work and a lot of possibility for error. Stocking parts to repair between events becomes much more expensive and harder, especially when you start breaking custom pieces.

You want to be noticed? Be good. You could drive the blandest car possible, but if you're good you'll get a lot more notice than the guy driving the off the wall one-off custom mid-engine Audi-trans subie powered Corvair (to pull an equally bizarre mix out of the old hole) who can't drive worth crap.

200+ hp in a TDI isn't cheap, either. 300+ will break your budget. Probably your heart, too.

Veg oil isn't recommended in high performance DI engines that you want to keep around.

yea if you want high powered eco friendly fuel, go with biodiesel. you want to completely burn the vegoil, and when doing hard acceleration and giving it tons of fuel, all of that unburnt crap will just wreck the motor.

One other thing to keep in mind is that with all the mods and mixing/matching you are planning on, you may end up in some type of "open" class.  Check rules and what type of vehicles you might end up competing against.
