Just curious if a straight pipe would be too loud on the AAZ in my vanagon? I will be doing a lot of sound deadening. But just how loud is it with a straight pipe. Obviously it wont be super straight I will just have the pipe snake around just like the stock WBX exhaust does. What do you think?

why not try it by yourself? I mean, the stock downpipe sucks, you can start by making another one, after that, the rest is easy.
if you find that its too noisy, then add mufflers
that's my plan

How much boost you runnin?
on straight exhaust you can hear a big turbo over the engine it's self
I plan on running 25psi on straight exhaust on a 1.6 bottom end. I don't think it iwll be too loud

Well I actually purchased an aftermarket custom down pipe. So all I have to do is add on to it.

I like the open 2-1/4" pipe on my 1.6. At least I know the turbo is spinning...

It will be pretty loud. We took out the mufflers on my son's 1.6TD and you can hear him coming down the street.

I've got 3" back and it isn't bad at all. The large pipe makes it drone a bit. I'd go 2.5" since your exhaust is short and 3" is probably overkill.

YEAH STACKS
but seriously, it won't cost much to try but I think it will be loud enough due to the short pipe, my jetta is fine straight but I tried it with half the pipe cut off and it was pretty loud... mind you it was right under my seat and yours is further back

I don't have a van so this may not apply but my 3" system turbo back was too loud for me.
I'm def to top it off so it being too loud may tell ya something?
I ended up going back and getting a Magnaflow installed.
It's still kinda loud but I can deal with it like it is.

well from my experience with my turbo back 3'' straight pipe on the Jetta I will tell you that I love driving it around town but do be prepared to pay some money to have a crazy sounding slow ride ( I didn't notice much performance gain) and don't expect your girlfriend to be too stoked on road trips. It sounds so cool though.

I've run:
- a stock system
- changed over to cat-back 2.25" with a Cherry Bomb
- then cat-back 2.25" unmuffled
- back to stock (full system replacement as the local authorities were going crazy handing out excessive noise tickets... didn't want to risk, but in hindsight would not have been a problem)
To be honest, I'm going back to a custom 2.25" but with a slightly larger muffler than a glasspack as it's not much louder than a stock system with a small exhaust leak.
