Just an idea: Diesel Restoration/Refurbishing party?

I drive a fair bit, to and from work, along with a fair bit of mileage while at work, and that gives me a lot of free time to think. One day as I drove past an old Studebaker on it's way to restoration, I thought about what it would take to have some sort of "lets build a car in a weekend!" type event. Even a "restoration club" of some sorts... I'm collecting parts for refurbishing my bit and cabriolet; I know I'm not alone in the parts collecting hobby; and I know group restorations have happened (search doesn't work when you're driving truck, but I know they are there.)
I don't have any complete ideas thought out yet, just basics, but is there any interest, at all, in having a "restoration fest" where a car gets stripped down and restored? perhaps raffled or auctioned off? or perhaps something that gets borrowed by the restoration crew for shows, and the like?
The more input the better, criticism welcome, but keep it civil and to the point so that perhaps someone can come up with an idea to nullify your objections.
Thanks,
tSoG.

I think it will be hard to find enough people close enough to make it happen. It would be pretty cool though I think

The issue that I foresee with a "restoration party" is that I'm always working on stuff, and then realize that I'm missing X parts, and the restoration is at a standstill until those parts arrive. The problem would be multiplied with a bunch of people, but if you're REALLY organized, it could work out, but there's always the question of who will pay for what, etc. I am kind of a tinkerer anyways, and all my projects take FOREVER, so just my .02.

I'll volunteer my car and a keg of beer. Very Happy (fdnyguy)
I am with him!! I have my project at a standstill, but have all of the parts necessary to finish. Just bought a brand new Lincoln MIG welder. I am in Pearl River, NY 10965. Car is sitting on a rotisserie and I am trying to take care of the rust...
Once that is done I am in rebuild mode!
IM if you like beer, and you can help
I will work around your schedule... I teach in Queens.

so, an update on the idea. I've got a 79 four door bit for cheeeeeeap. Planned on throwing a tired, but running 1.6td in it, building a cage, and racing it in the 24 hour of LeMons in Nelson Ledges, Ohio this October. Due to financial reasons, I was unable to do so, but was shocked at the willingness of several friends to tear into the project... After talking to a few close friends about my lack of funding, I realized this willingness extended to financial support.
Still working out the logistics, but the basics, we are forming a car club, meeting a weekend or two a month, and working on the car in my garage. everyone chips in initially for a membership fee, and then small membership dues are collected every week. buy a turbo diesel rust bucket for the engine, strip it of everything else valuable, take the 79 bit to car shows, and sell off the parts at shows/swap meets to pay for insurance/plates/reg, and car show entry fees, along with entry to races the car is capable of participating in (auto/rally x, LeMons, 2010 GRMC, etc)
Any input/ideas would be great. Thanks!

well, looking good so far, met with a few people, and we're gonna have a lil campout; burgers, dogs, beer, car tinkering... Open invitation to all, although I have to warn you, it's kinda like a timeshare, we're gonna get the paper work done, officers elected, the project rolling, and try to get everyone to join, but no pressure.
Tentative date is August 22-23, but all the locals are kinda flexible. If there is enough interest for the weekend before, or after, we'll gladly change it. Event will be rain or shine, plenty of space for camping, and can clear some space in the barn/loft if the weather turns lousy. we have a pond for fishing/swimming, and will have a lil bonfire saturday night. Parts swapping if there is interest, and of course lots of scenery if anyone wants to have a cruise.
As for the location, we are located about 45 miles south east of Erie, PA. Directions will be provided to those interested.
please lemme know if ya'll are interested!

you can't come unless you donate Giles Pumps for the club.
oh, and load up the whole car with 1.6/9 blocks, manifolds, turbos, and 5speed trannies... or else you don't get to partake in the food or drink.
Lemme know if you're free tyler, we'd love to have ya.
