Hello all, this is my first post over here.... I am an apple farmer in central NH USA and am about to get a pair of volvo 740 turbo diesels from a neighbor.  They have been in her yard for a couple years now.  one had the head rebuilt and installed and from what i heard the compression was to high and it blew out the rings, but there is a new rebuilt block with new pistons and all the parts to put the motor back together I guess.... there is another car as well and I guess it would run if it is warm out but I do not know ...  the situation is that they were her husbands cars and he was a diesel NUT, he has sooooooo many diesel motors around the place its crazy...and she told me he had all the parts to rebuild the one with the new head and the other was a running 'parts car' for him.

right now my plan is to try to get the 'parts car' up and running and use it and to take the rebuilt head and new block/pistons/etc and put them all together and put the motor into my 1989 audi 90q that was originally going to get a 5cyl 10vt but i had to abandon....

I have built a number of gas cars but this will be my first venture into diesels....

What are you waiting for-get on it. Just remember use good motor oil, and no short distances, those motors don't fair well with short cold trips. Warm it before driving hard. As a matter of fact, if you already have the valve cover off on the motor you are doing, maybe remove the cam bearing caps one at a time to see waht kind of condition they are in and lube them before firing it up.

Well the cars are still up the road in the lady's yard, i have to go up there to do some yardwork for her at some point in exchange for getting the volvo's a bit cheaper so when i go up there to do that I'll take some pics... I'll probably end up going through both motors before i actually can use either.. the only problem is you say they dont like short trips...most of the trips i end up doing are from my house up to the apple orchard which is about 2.5/3 miles each way.....
I was a bit confused when i heard the 'compression was to high' thing as well....i guess i'll find out when i get in there!!

until i get some pics of the volvos up here are some pics of my other cars....

So you guys want to hear the story behind the scirocco....ok well here goes,  was may 2 '05 and I was returning from lunch to work when apparently a large truck was in the median obstructing the view and i was unable to see an suv and I was t-boned..pushed the car around 200ft and i was airlifted to the hospital...in there for a month or so..16 screws in my right arm, brain injury. punctured lung, etc.....but i did'nt die and i'm 'back on the horse' building scirocco #2!!!  and this one should make close to 300whp!!!  so thats it, the story behind the scirocco picture....

It's a good thing Germans build good cars. Yours was a beautiful example, both before and (sadly) after the crash

Working on the diesels is the exact same as a gasser, except the oil is blacker

2-3km long trips aren't the best, especially with a turbo. Just make sure to take it for a good sunday drive at least 2 times a month and you shouldn't have any problems.

you should go for a 5cyl 2,4IDI w/ turbo or 2,5 (m-)TDI from a VW transporter or Audi 100/A6. The 6cyl is way too long.
Audi 80 1,6TD:

1,9l TD conversion done!

I would like to get a 5 cyl, but i have no money and these 2 2.4 6cyl's are near for me and cheap so i would like to use them....will they work?
