This is my first engine build, i'm looking for all tips that people have, since theres a million ways to do this....
the machine shop is taking care of the shortblock (for the most part)
have them install total seal rings. (get the oem geotz rings & send to total seal)
many people have had problems with the two piece thrust bearing... i think the general concensus here is to buy the three piece thrust bearing.
here's some links as to why you shouldn't use the integral thrust bearings.

also get them to at least polish the crank. it just makes sense when installing new bearings.
what kind of motor are you building? 1.6 or 1.9? i'm assuming 1.9TD since you want crazy power
My total seal rings just came in today.
I heard Glyco bearings (mains) is the way to go, I'm going to see if my shop can track them down.
Sofar the shop is:
-Balance/polish crank
-shot peen con rods, resize as needed
-Line bore mains journal for oversized bearings
-hot tank
-bore/plateau hone
-install oil squirters
I'll be shure to check if they plan on replacing the bearings, and using a 3-piece thrust kit, I'll also see if they plan on lightning/balancing the intermediate shaft
This is a 1.6 with a 1.9 head.
If your converting a NA to turbo you would need turbo pistons too..right??
the pistons on the turbo blocks have oil squirter cut outs...I don't know if the NA pistons have the cutouts???

I have a brand new set of 1.6TD OEM pistons here, with the proper cutouts.
unless the block needs it , i would not line the the main bearings . and i haven't seen a vw diesel block that needed it ... yet . not to say some where not close ....
a lot of machine shops use this as a money maker and blindly line bore everything .... and unfortuantly many of them do not have the skilled employee's to do a acurate and proper job of line boring .
CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN!!!!!
Make sure you are working in a clean environment and do the above posts..
There isn't really any "tricks" I don't believe. just go slow and follow the steps listed in the Bentley..
