SO I drove the new Jetta a few weeks back. It was quite. Had some good power. No stick to be had, only the auto. Sales person knew 0 about them. I am 6'4" so even with the seat down head room / visability was somewhat of a issue. I am hoping that without the giant sunroof there will be a bit more room.
These appear to be hitting the dealers now. My wife drove my neighbors 2004 passat and really liked it. She has given the green light to "start researching" a new jetta or wagon. Anyone else drive one? What was your impression? What do you hear about the sport wagon's? Looks like they might have less room than the 2004 model.
In a purely "not my car" sense, I wonder what you could get for power out of these if you went to a free flow exhaust and raised the boost. Computer crash most likely :lol:

the new ones will have the common rail, but also a particulate filter. every once in a while it throws diesel into the exhaust to burn all the built up carbon from the particulate filter. better for the environment, but i'd imagine it might be hell for performance mods.

What does HGR and Final I/ Final II mean? Two-speed final drive?
I guess HGR is the tranny code. NFI on the final 1 and 2 deal. Did you see 4th and 5th were both .98. :? I drove the funky auto so I cant comment on the manual. This info is for the tdi sport wagon. I dont know if the tranny will be diferent than the sedan. I got some full spec sheets via adobe from the dealer, but cant figure out how to post it with out it coming out all jumbled.
1-4th are final I and 5th & 6th are final II. my JNC 6 speed box is about that too.. works out to around 110km/h (or 65mph) @ 2k rpm.

... Oh. That's right, it's a DSG box instead of a traditional torque-converter automatic.
So it has two final drive gear pairs? Weeeeeird. Sounds overly complex, too, why not just pick gears appropriately and only have to change them on two shafts instead of three?

DSG has less drivetrain losses and faster shifting. I summed up all the info out there on the 2009 station wagon and sedan TDI Jetta here:

Yeah, DSG has fewer losses relative to a "traditional" automatic, yes. But more than a standard, single clutch, twin-shaft manually shifted transmission.
I'm just wondering why they went for two FD ratios...
I drove the regular Jetta. It was quiet, peppy, and comfortable. It had the DSG. I could see myself in one of these

Nice link. My wife and I need a second car quickly. If it looks like the JSW will not be in for a few months we will be getting the sedan. Hard to find one with the rear seat side airbags though.
I read on another forum that this same engine in Europe was rated at 170 and 190hp. Perhaps a different intake and different programing. It will be interesting to see what the chip reprogramers can do with the US spec unit. I wonder if the European units have 3 cat. converters on them?
