Oil light + buzzer
« on: August 19, 2008, 03:59:20 am »
I made a little trip today about 90 minutes each way on the highway. its mostly flat apart from about three 1-2km climbs. Nothing major. A couple worth shifting into 4th for.
Roughly 70 minutes into my trip (both ways. going and coming) my oil light flashes on and buzzes for a split second. I look at my temp and its only at about 20% ???
I realize that it's been this cold the whole drive but im starting to wonder about that temp sensor. I KNOW the thermostat works. I put a new on in less than a month ago and i tested it and it's been up to temp before and everything was working well. But what on earth was this about today??? I've had the oil light come on and buzz once before when my over flow tank decided to leak (on this same highway) and dump all my coolant and pop the head almost simultaneously.

the symptoms:
REALLY low temp gauge
Moderately cold out (for august, raining actually)
and the oil light comes on and buzzes very briefly after runing for over an hour

This seems totally bizarre to me but some back ground info is...
I just changed the HG yesterday and put in 4L of new oil and topped it up with some that I had drained (it was very very fresh oil, not even 500km on it) it could be a tad too full. Could that do this? what the heck is going on. Perhaps my temp sensor is going at the same time as this just to add confusion? Rather a major point probably worth mentioning in the begining is that the temp light flashed the whole time. (i thought it was just a little low but turns out its not low at all)
Thanks...
Ed.

haven't you swapped the sensors or wires? I remember this has been discussed before.

the buzzer sounds when the pressure is too low on idle, and if the pressure is below 2Bar after 2000rpm (lower on diesel)
so, you might just have a glitch on the tacho W signal.

or defective board (very rare, always sensor issues as far as I've seen)

Mine did the same thing when I used a Fram 3569. I had pieces of the filter media and dirt looking stuff on the cam lobes. I saw some guys on here having problems with the design of the fram.....some guys on here swear by them, some don't.....I don't want to start the oil filter fight again. All I know is I went back to the Bosch tall filters and the buzzing after the longer trips quit. I didn't have an oil temp gauge or a tach if that matters or not.
First and foremost I would listen to gigaz2 and just about everybody else on here and think of my posts as more of a last resort to try. Lucas

Does anyone know how long we will be able to get filters for our 1.6L ? Both oil and fuel....

I ask because AutoZone's vendor - not Fram -  has down graded the fuel filter to one w/o the water drain. I had to go to Murray's Discount and Order one with the drain.  So, I checked to see if they can Order one for the Diesel Ford Escorts as it was a larger filter - No dice. Not even special order....

So I started to question how long our filters will be generally available. Since they are no longer on the shelf, it might eventually come.

Along these lines, has anyone changed the oil filter boss to accept another filter ? I have a Mobil-1 all synthetic filter on mine, but was thinking the HUGE filter Ford uses on their PowerStroke diesel's would be around for a very long time. Besides, it holds 2 quarts of oil so the filter area is many times what ours is.

Ideas ?

wondered the same myself. I usually get 5 at a time from autohauz that way I have what I need and free shipping. I even went to the TDI spin on oil filter as someone said on here it held more pressure than the regular one. The fuel filters I can still get locally and at the same price as online.

HOW's the buzzer doing on the original post?

Hey,
Happened again today. Yeah i think my sensor wires are backwards. Gigaz2, what were you saying about swapping sensors/wires? do you mean having them backwards or getting new ones?
i proooobably need new ones im sure they're stock. What is that about low pressure though?
I don't have a tach with the "w" signal. I wanted to make one but my friend has to make the converter for me first to use my "gasser" tach.
So you reckon that i have the wires crossed, if not, the sensor is *expletive* ?
It happened coming home from work but for much loonngger this time. I was afraid it was over heating so i quicky dropped my mate off (who i car pool with) and hurried home but not too fast :P trying to keep it cool. I popped the hood while it was runing and my over flow tank was steaming moderately nothing extreme and it was just over the "max" line but the lid was still tight. i had a leaking injector/hardline which covered the HG in what i THOUGHT was water and freaked out about but it was diesel *phew*. So I shut it off straight away and about 10 seconds later the fan turned on.    If my resevoir was over full could it slowly bleed out the excess like that? or do i have many a reason to concern with my plethora of problems....  :(
Thanks for all the help!!!
kindest people on earth, right here!

do NOT go with fram.  absolute garbage!!!!  filter media is sub-par with oem, and the low pressure valve opens too early.  sending unfiltered oil through the system.  my best guess is that it is designed for a thinner oil, and would explain how the filter media isn't robust enough to stand the punishment from the thicker fluid running through it.

go OEM!!! i bought the amsoil EA filter...  filters down to 15 microns... i don't notice any difference, but no oil buzzing/light.  filter is supposedly good till about 20'000km's.  good because i don't change my oil often

i change my oil constantly. But i got some dumb white one last change
HOLY FRICK THATS IT!
I got some white crappy looking one because my import shop was closed That's righT! im gonna go see what make it is ... piece of junk
Puralator :S like the shipping company....
what the frick .... wait i paid like almost 25 bucks for that! what a rip!!!

ok so about the flashing temp light
I unplugged the wire leads on the "t" that goes into the head and no lights changed. Still blinking temp light. I swapped them around....
still blinking temp light....
i unplugged them 1 at a time... still blinking temp light
the level is good, its not leaking anywhere that i can see... no patches on the card board test. What the heck is going on. Can the sensor detect a loss in pressure? like the oil one does? I know my thermo-switch works because the fan comes on. There are two sensors on the "t", are they both for temp? there is one on the top of the flywheel side of the head that i think is temp too and the one on the over flow resevoir is for what? to check the level?

I know the oil one is right at the oil return from the turbo.

Anyways, does anyone know what to do about this?

ps. gigaz2, i think you were right about the pressure thing there was a slight leak where the oil return goes to the filter.

See I told you to listen to gigaz2 more than me

This is what problem I had with the fram, purolator, wix, etc... I didn't want to start the oil filter fight, but I am in the camp of "IF it's not VW or OEM then it isn't on my VW diesel" This is what I use....

http://www.autohausaz.com/search/product.aspx?sid=wodchujdtvv2g5ve4u4kgkz1&makeid=800026@VW&modelid=1369661@JETTA%20TDI&year=1997&cid=20@Engine%20Parts,%20Seals%20%26%20Gaskets&gid=5340@Oil%20Filter

it is the 068115561E part number....great luck with it. It is for a 1997 TDI, is all the same part number as the earlier 1.6  but it has the   E   on the end. Either one are better than the alternatives.

Im just going to throw out the most expensive oil filter i've ever bought. Congrats Purolator, you thoroughly suck at making decent oil filters.

Thanks for the heads up
augh
useless.... *throws filter at wall and it just drops like a stone into the dumpster with a satisfying banngggggg*
