New Dial Gauge for pump timing

So I got my new dial gauge to do the pump timing but now I have a question. Once you put the adapter on how far on do you push it onto the dial? How much of the rod should be sticking out of the adapet piece that pushes onto the dial gauge? Thanks!

When it's at TDC, you want at least 2mm(.09") preload so that when you turn it until it stops moving, It stops moving because the plunger did, not because it ran out of travel. Then turn the outer ring until the needle lines up with 0, and turn the engine for the desired reading.

I believe I paid around $80 including shipping off of ebay. It came from germany. I came with the camshaft locking plate and injection pump locking pin as well.

Oh wow. Not too bad then. I currently use a ruler for a cam locking plate and a socket extension as a locking pin :P or my friend's hand.

A number of people on here have bought the same kit of ebay:

Diesels do it by squeezing real hard.

The extended urls kinda make scrolling to read a thread a pain.  You can highlight the url and hit the url button.  Delete the first end bracket.  Place it after the url and type the text you want to show between the first end bracket and the second start bracket.  You can hit quote for my post to see the syntax that works for me.  Pretty easy to do once you're used to it.
