What turbo produces the best fuel milage on a 1.6 ltr?
« on: August 13, 2008, 08:14:33 pm »
I've thinking a lot lately about switching the turbo on the caddy. The "Ray-Jay" turbo installed now works fine, but seems a bit laaagy. Right now driving on the expressway at about 70 mph its pushing about 1 psi of boost with the EGT varis from 510* F to about 750*F
Any theory's or practical knowledge on what it takes to get better mpg's out of the 1.6 motor. 2.5 down pipe and exhaust. Intercooler, cold air intake, 8lb. flywheel
Thanks,
Jeff B.

you actually want a bit less boost when you don't need it.  ideally a VNT turbo with closed vanes going down the highway *should* be more like a non turbo car.

what you want is boost on demand.  you need to pass someone, and boost is there nice and quick and then you pass.  to me more boost is just more HP which takes more fuel...  maybe some people think differently, but n/a's get such great mileage, but suck at hill climbing (unless they are Giles'd up, or smoke like a chimney   )

Thanks to everyone so far,
The plan is to have Giles build a pump in about a month. I have GTD injectors. Also, I will have the 1.6 stock injectors set to 155bar for comparssion.
Which VNT would be the best choice? I am concerned about making the VNT control set up, How bad was it to build? What would be a second choice to the VNT setup. Possibly a small ball bearing turbo. The Callaway exhaust manifold uses a standard 4 bolt set up to attach the turbo.
Right now I'm using a tweaked NA pump. I average about 42 mpg at about 70 mph here in the flat midwest. The boost guage says about 1 psi at that speed. I'm having trouble finding my notes on the current turbo size.

does your turbo look like this?
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=632707

thats a rayjay only good for 7psi max unless you add a turbo pump that has a LDA fuel inrichment device then it will go up to 14psi!
real laggy turbo old school!
that turbo set up is a old B.A.E. turbo kit from the early 80's
that blue anadized thing on top of the injection pump is a aftermarket LDA witch gives more fuel when recieving a boost signal priceless!!

My turbo doesn't look anything like yours. I'm having trouble working photobucket for some reason. I found the info that was printed on the turbo.  It's a Roto Master but the installation manual mentions T04B (Garrett?)  more numbers on the housing: 10414-C  and  104147-C. The Intake A/R 60   the exhaust A/R .4     The turbo will spool to at least 20 psi (back when I had the proper turbo pump.... shortly after it started leaking big time!)

you got some pic.s you can post of your set up?
that would be eaisest!
K14 was used on echos and 1.9TD and so was the k03 on 1.9TD's
i'm running a K03 on my 1.9TD in my caddy and it's pretty quick off the line  ! i plan on putting a K14 on next as soon as i get my down pipe welded up!
