why are there no ALH engines?

ive been asking everywhere in the UK for an ALH head, and they literaly dont exist. my breakers yard tells me its because they self destruct, aparently the heads crack, is this true? ive bort sum ARP studs to stop it lifting, will this help, will i be able to run big boost and a 2.0 pd block?

I never saw a cracked TDI head, he probably confuse with AAZ head.

ya the weak point in the 1.9 heads is the pre-cups.. since tdi's don't have them they are much stronger and don't have the cracks between valves.
if you could use a PD head, that would be far superior since PD's were built to withstand some serious boost... as stated in another thread, i'm curious if a distributor type system (have it geared to linearly increase the timing) could fire the injectors sort of like spark plugs... since from what tintin said the injectors only open once. you would need to get a way to control how much fuel is injected though.. so a small circuit board would be needed.
i wonder how the injectors get the signal for more fuel? would it be an increase in voltage or resistance? if resistance, the pedal could be adapted for that...

x2. The only head failures I have personally seen on an ALH is a lifter collapsing causing piston to meet valves, which usually snaps the camshaft. I don't even think they crack between the valves like the IDI's used to.

PD injector are ON/OFF, the opening time (Duration) is calculated in Crank degre, and I do not remember if its +5V or +12V.
To know what injector can be opened, It's based on the Cam position sensor, Bip signal of the last closing inj., and crank sensor.
It is possibly feasible to make a controller, but probably much more complacated than install the Bosch ECU with the minimum necessary wiring.

ALH heads are very robust, they can definitely handle lots of boost. I am surprised that you're having such a hard time finding one in the uk though, those things should be a dime a dozen no?

i have heard of the plastic impeller on the water pump go and the belt pings and some mashed valves , and a few pop just geting a complet engine out of a brakers (junk yard) seen one like that last week , and i said i will give you $40 for the old engine with pump injectors etc and he says ok then the other guy says it has to go back to the place he got the good engine from :cry:

well if i use a PD bottom end i wont have to worry about the water pump probs. tbh it is quite a new engine still, not to many mk4s in the scrap yard yet, maybe im just unlucky
ill just keep on looking
id love to go PD but cant get my head around wiring, and i recon i can make a VE go just as fast, but we'll see

Try searching for AGR then. Same base engine with different ECU and turbo. Or AHF/ASV. Same base engine with better bearings.
Whats the thing with PD block anyways? 038 style blocks last alot of abuse. The difference with PD 150/130 block is the bearing size and since I havent heared of any actual failures with VE engine blocks... PD100 ATD engine is a weird combination. It has the same crank that ALH etc. but the same oil cooled pistons as ARL/ASZ. Different sized coolant pipe fitting depending on the make year but other thatn that no diffrerence. My curent Daily is made with ATD block,crank,rods,pistons and ported ALH head. And AGR crank positioning sensor and rotator.
I'm going to use ALH block on my monster build too. Just use Sputtered bearings and be done with it. Gasser gyus are using even smaler bearings. And 1000hp Audi I5 engines have same bearings that you can use on ALH... 1000hp and 800nm or so... And they run some 9s 1/4 mile times...
