So, can you swap a mk2 cluster into a mk1?
« on: August 07, 2007, 03:03:21 pm »
I can't find any tach for my mk1 Jetta TD, so I wanted to know if I could swap a mk2 gauge cluster w/ a tach in its place.  Is this possible?  Thanks in advance.

well i haven't done it yet! but i have been sizing it up! i'm putting a jetta dash in my pickup and i am using a MK2 diesel cluster w/ tach ! I do have to modify the metal brackets that hold the cluster in place! i noticed that the mk2 are a little wider than the mk1 jetta cluster! so centering the cluster will be in order when modify the brackets! also you will need some wires and the plug to splice into!other than that I think it can be done ! I will find out soon when i attempt to put it all together for my self!
 thanks Duane

I'm in a similar situation. I was hoping to just swap out the clock portion of the Mk1 cluster with the tach portion of the Mk2... I haven't taken either out yet to see if that is even possible. Anyone know?

Sounds like we all have the tach "wants". I snagged two tach clusters, one from an '85 Quantum that I plan to put into an'80 Dasher and one from an '85 Jetta that I plan to install into my pickup. Just havent gotten around to making the swap. Too many irons in the fire as the saying goes. I did notice that the brackets are a bit different but didnt notice the diiference in width like blkboostedtruck noticed. I would think its just a matter of wiring after centering. I have the scematics if that will help you. Then you can tell us all how the job went

The CE1 (dual plug) and CE2 (single plug) wiring is quite different. It could be done I would imagine if you had the proper plug and could splice it into you harness. There are (or were it's down at the moment) schematics here or try here (russian site)
or a bentley.

I have seen threads on the vortex about rewiring CE2 clusters for CE1 harnesses, This one is for a gasser MFA cluster but, it should give you some help.
