Not a clue.
Do you know what it came out of?
With all those small contacts I would think it's some sort of control solenoid rather than just a reg relay.
Maybe call the dealer with the part# and ask?

On some AAZs there's some emission control stuff... a microswitch on the throttle and a secondary solenoid on the front of the IP to alter timing under certain circumstances... I believe this is the unit that does the thinking.
Many people strip it all off... car runs fine without it.

It's also the timer for the glow plug relay wich is separate in this setup. It uses input from the coolant temp sensor among other things.

Are you sure?
I don't see a contact large enough for that to be the glow plug relay.
The GP relay has to HUGE contacts on it. I don't see those here.

I'm now interested enough that I'm gonna get a definitive answer on the whole emissions control thingie, but in the meantime I believe what Choppercat is referring to is that this is the controller for, among other things, a separate glow plug relay.
MK3s have funky emissions controls *and* funky glow plugs... they are temperature sensitive but are also triggered by things like the driver's side door under certain circumstances. So, a control unit does the thinking and a separate relay switches the actual 60 amps.
I'll check the reference books tonight and confirm... but I'm thinking the controller and the relay are two distinct boxes on some MK3s... perhaps not the OPs, since he says it works fine.
I *love* the glow plugs on my MK3... by the time you close the door and do up the seatbelt the plugs are good and hot and away you go.

That's what I meant. It triggers the glow plug relay according to various parameters. It also triggers the timing advance (solenoid in front of IP) at 2800 RPM...In stock form  .

My cars glow plug system is all messed up and its running off a toyota relay.
Yes there is a seperate relay for the glowplugs 357 911 253A in my car.
I want to fix the system as it is suppose to be so will i need this big relay as well?? its not available anywhere?
And yeha my car does have the additional solenoid but i think its disconnected, it smokes like mad maybe cuz of this or maybe because my turbo leaks a lil oil in the intake....

Nope... other than confirming that there's a control unit (most likely what you've pictured) and a separate relay on the fuse block to carry the heavy current to the glowplugs.
Really want to understand the advance solenoid on the AAZ IP... if anyone has any definitive sources please holler !!

It is a control box for the engine and glowplugs. I had one in my VW Caddy -99. It controls the glowplug relay and the tempsensors and uses that info to switch on the GP relay and cold start advance etc.
On my Caddy it even controlled a preglow sequence as soon as the driver door was opened the first time to preheat the plugs in case of engine start.
It also handles the immobilizer if the car has it. And I even think it has some sort of shutdown in case of oil pressure loss. It kills the power to the IP solenoid. Atleast it did in my Caddy. As a result of a lost oilplug
