IV 1.6TD ENGINE IP PUMP AND TURBO
« on: July 31, 2008, 04:28:14 am »
Hey all.
Got a 1.6td that has been fully rebuilt , and now turning attention to the pump and turbo. Engine is fitted with a K14 Turbo and what i believe is a standard IP. Question is ,is it worth looking for a pump with an LDA or spending cash on this pump and turbo. Will want to mildly tune the pump in the future after the engine has bedded in , but unsure what to do. Is it worth keeping the K14 also and having that rebuilt. Dont want to go too mad with this as vehicle will mainly be driven around town , with not much more than 70 - 80 mph speed at max.
will post some pics up of the pump shortly
Cheers Kirk

turbo pumps have a 'spaceship' on top.  if yours has that then you're set.  the k14 turbo spools very nicely at low rpm's, but suffers at higher rpm's.  (it's a good compromise for low end torque and decent mid ranged power though, which is ideally what you want)

the larger k24's & T3's are laggy down low, but scream all the way to the redline   (however more so the T3)

mild tuning will give you a few ponies for sure.  so it all depends on your driving needs whether or not you need to change turbo size.

Thanks jt for the quick response , i am afraid it does not have the spaceship (LDA) , so not worth bothering with i suppose
Would be better for the driving done , that the turbo spools up quick , not so bothered with top end really.
this is the pump

Thanks Andrew ,
The engine /Gearbox assembly originally came out of a 1992 Golf van. I am transplanting the engine and 5spd into a Mk 1 caddy which at present is a 1.6NA. I have been also told that the pump in the picture is the same as the 1.6NA pump. I have not had time to compare them yet , is this correct?.
Also would it be best in the long run to look for an LDA pump , can't see me wanting to turn the boost up to more than 15psi to be honest , especially with diesel at around £6.30 a gallon ($12.50 )
Thanks Kirk

With the LDA pump = 68 hp and 98 ft/lb torque
With N/A pump =       59 hp and 81 ft/lb torque

When looking for a LDA pump would this be from 1.9 AAZ , also what are the simple checks i can do if the pump has been removed from the vehicle , to see if it is worth buying
Cheers Guys

Ok Fellas , Bit of an update with this one , and after a bit of advice from you pump guru's. Managed to get hold of another pump.I believe it   has come off of a 1993 1.6gtd passat and i managed to get it for next to nothing :D . Is this the pump i am after ,to be an improvement on the standard pump as pictured further up the post
Would it be ok just to have it stripped and looked at by my local pump place , or is this the time to start uprating it while it is off etc ? , can it be uprated   not looking for stupid power , just a nice driveable motor , that above all is reliable
Hope you guys can help , and point me in the right direction
Cheers Kirk

well one thing you could tackle while it's off, is at least getting it re-sealed if it was never previously done.  then again, didn't they start using ULSD in Europe back in '93???  do you know how long the pumps been sitting open like that? just having it cleaned would be a very good idea... you don't want ANY dirt inside.

Thanks for the reply jt , not sure how long the pump has been off , but suspect 3 - 4 weeks. Did plan on getting it looked at , resealed etc , just wondering if there was anything else to sort while it was down. Also i take it that the nipple on the top LDA has a pipe that goes to the blanked off nipple on the inlet manifold on this 1V engine. Any links pics , diagrams would be appreciated , complete newby to this.
Also what is ULSD ?
