I've been thinkering with my 1990 jetta to get it to start in less time than like 15 seconds  and i stumbled across the fuel screw (of course) so i tried different positions for starting
and driving
good lord a turned in fuel screw adds hopeless amounts of unexpected power and lots of lovely black smoke! I plugged my little plastic blow off valve thing with a cork (that plastic piece on the intake manifold) but i haven't touched the waste gate, or so i think? Is there a blow off valve (that plastic thing) and a waste gate? or have i plugged the waste gate and im making tons of boost already? It doesn't seem quite THAT fast and if i may ask...
is the waste gate that little line of sorts that seems to link two parts of the turbo together? or do i have no idea what's going on. i wish i had a picture but im too computer retarded... actually i'll try and upload one
http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f279/edmcclung/waste-gate.jpgi dunno if that worked but if it did... outlined in blue is what i am under the impression is the blow off valve that i've corked (or equivalent) and in red is what im asking about. is that the waste gate or what? and if it is how do you plug it
yes yes, im going to get egt set up! and i have a boost gauge to put on there and an intercooler off a volvo my mate made up for me
also, will this set up rooferize my poor little jetta? i don't have an aaz head or studs or an aaz gasket but i recently put a new one on (and a rubber cam cover gasket which i highly recomend!)
anywho, thanks for taking the time to listen to my blithering. this site makes me feel like an idiot when it comes to this stuff but it's pretty darn fun to play around with
cheers,
Ed
oh and im taking the entire exhaust off for 3 inch and perhaps a home made downpipe for better flow. thinking about spliting it infront of the rear tires! should look sick!!! i hope!
Hope you have an EGT gauge. If not, enjoy your engine while it lasts.
Put these two guys

on either side of you picture and voila:

The blue circled thing is an unnecessary POS. However, you may blow the cork out if your getting allot of smoke at full boost, as your probably pushing +30 PSI with the waste gate wide open.
Do your 3" exhauste, by all means, but put a preturbo EGT in ASAP, and a boost gauge.
Read:
http://www.vwdiesel.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=4583&highlight=spruceYou pistons, exhaust valves, and turbine blades won't survive over 1500° ( your allready over it), and your stock turbo won't survive +25 PSI (your allready over it).
My (possible) overboost turbine blade failure:
http://www.vwdiesel.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=14895&highlight=blade+failureI'm not a big fan of moving the fuel screw. You might wan't to put 'er back the way it was, install the EGT thing, boost gauge and 3" exhauste. Then approach the limits cautiosly with the LDA pin and govorner screw. You won't be dissapointed.
Shoot sorry (for being in the wrong forum)
I don't run it hot like that normally it was just a little stretch, jimfoo but thanks for the warning
i have everything already except for the egt (which im wating for)
thanks saurkraut for the input; that's what i was planning to do. i know lotsa black means too hot. But it makes me wonder... how do people make so much boost like that and run obviously really hot? I don't really understand how so many people do it but... 1300 is pushing the limit already and you say i was making 1500??
i was watching youtube videos of people with rediculous tdi trucks and they made more smoke than a coal burning power plant. how do they get away with that?
they only last enough for the shooting of the video

seriously, the engine can take it, you just don't know for how long, could be 5 minutes or not even complaint if you don't push it for too long.
i can't tell if that is a serious reply or not
But jesus some guys have more money than sense if that's the case
Itīs a serious post, itīs not the coolant temperature you should be worrying about, itīs the EGT. Black smoke = high EGT
ditto, if you drive it like that you're going to be looking for a motor.. You need an egt and boost guage asap
but black smoke comes out basically every time i start going from zero? should there be no visible exhaust what so ever?
a bit is expected, you can't always perfectly match air and fuel in a non-electronic system, but a lot of black smoke is an indicator of being way over fueled - point being you don't know anything until you have some metrics to tell you what's going on in there. Broken record -> A blown motor is more expensive than a 130 dollar EGT gauge and probe and an afternoon of installing it.
no, these engines should smoke, even new they smoked, but only during warmup or serious acceleration.
have you seen a new VW right out of the dealer? yap, they smoke sometimes.
if you can see a smokescreen behind you, that is too much, back off on the LDA a bit or/and the fuel screw.
if you don't have a EGT gauge, don't try to squeeze out all the power, unless you have a spare engine being rebuilt
