I need help in kowing what to look for in buying a turbo for an 85 Jetta turbo diesel engine. I bought a used 1.6 turbo engine (mechanical head) without the turbo and exhasust manifold. I need to find a replacment that will bolt up to the stock flanges (I also have the exhaust down pipe). What was the stock turbo, what are its specifications, and what do I need to look for in finding either a stock turbo or a replacement. I am going to install this in my 80 vw pickup. I have a diesel 5 speed already and want good milleage and better performance. I would appreciate some counsel and some of your experiences.
I have heard guys thow around turbo numbers but don'e know what they mean.
Is it true that the smaller the turbo, the faster it spools and perhaps give better low/mid range? What brand and model of turbos do I need to look for?
In any case I plan to bolt whatever turbo I get to the stock manifolds and down pipe unless someone else has done a similar conversion and found other parts to be better.
I would appreciate any counsel you all have.
Also, I want to buy a good used turbo, wast gate, exhaust manifold, and both oil lines. If you have one, I would be intersted.
Thanks

If the down pipe you have has a rectagular(almost square)manifold, its a t3 or k24.Buy a exhaust manifold from a 1.6. for feed line theres nice kits on ebay for the t3 ,but youll need to tap the feed fitting on the turbo or find a transfer fitting, the vw t3 uses strange thread.Intake manifold from the t3 will be fine.I made my own return line by tapping into the oil pan

Hey Thanks for some insight. I'm still not sure if it is a t3 or k24. I have the square ports. Will both fit? I have the actual and complete 1.6 turbo diesel engine without the exhaust manifold and turbo. I have both input and out put line fittings already in the block and oil filter (minus the actual lines; since the seller took these also. I would like to find out what turbo actually came on the engine and the specifications so I could match to a similar turbo if possible, or hunt down an original.
Thanks for the tip. It narrows downt the search. I am wondering if it is the k24. These seem to be plentiful. Do you have any stats on the k24?
Thanks,
Greg
If it from a 1.6 and its a kkk its probably a k24
I looked at a couple of pictures that I took of the original turbo with my phone camera, and you are right, it is a KKK. If it is a K24 do they come with a standard retangle shaped port for bolting to the exhaust manifold and a rectangle flange which connets to the down pipe? I have the cast down pipe and it has a retangled fitting. Does the K24 come with a variety of inlet and outlet diameters for the intake?
Hey we're getting there. This narrows the field even more. If it is not a K24, what else could it be?
Thanks again. This is really helping me.
By the way, your engine looks very sanitary. Have you got it together yet?
