Is my GTD engine knackered?
« on: July 19, 2008, 09:38:59 am »
I have just got round to removing the manifolds and turbo from my 1.6 GTD engine after it being sat in a garage for two months.

I thought I was only going to have the turbo fixed but I noticed that when cranking the engine over by hand no4 cylinder has air escaping out of the exhaust port on the compression stroke. There is also some sort of whitish powder in the exhaust port.
Is this just because its been sat around or is that really bad?
I'm surprised if the head is gone because its obviousely had a genuine exchange head and pump in the past. engine has 175,000 miles on it.

seems to be water/humidity related deposits.
the air escaping could be from having more of that on the valveseats, so you could get away with it, but I would take the head off to check it out.

I didn't think of that, thanks. yeah I am going to take the head off now and have a look.

While doing this today I also found the intermediate shaft has about 1cm in/out play in it but none side to side, what could this be? its been causing to run closer to the block so the timing belt isn't fully on it.
