Ok, Gasket #3 going in tonight. #2 got dinged as I lowered the head on last time, it was pretty heavy/awkward installing it with the manifolds on by myself and the Sami is pretty high. this time I'll use the chain fall hoist that is right above the engine (and has been the whole time)
I'm using new bolts too.
I'm getting sick of this project (but not as sick of it as my wife)
Finally started it last night, runs great!
I still have lots of wiring to do, exhaust, etc, but I did take it for a spin up the road and it felt good, lots of torque!
I am using a Geo tracker gear reduction starter which turns it over better then expected (the stock sami starter was very weak)
The Radiator is from a Rabbit, with 2 10" electric fans, seems to work well.
The only problem I am having is that two of my injectors seem to leak a tiny bit, no big deal.
Oil Psi is good and coolant seemed to flow like it should.
I'll post some pics when I get a chance.
congrats on getting it running man.
Yea, those upside-down headgasket pictures are from my car LOL. Glad to see I'm the example of what NOT to do.
It is very easy to install the headgasket upside down! Good thing the experts on this forum have a sharp eye though.
I'll second Vince here.
You found it BEFORE you attempted a start up. Kudos Mr.
Nah.... like I said... you're brilliant, because you took the time to check for oil pressure *before* firing it up !
I also think your brilliant for catching the mistake before you fired it up!
Excellent double checks make for excellent work!
You get a thumbs up! No make that 2 thumbs up!

Dude, that's Roeper...
Andrew
I still remember Siskel, alas.

Where are the injectors leaking? FYI, if they are leaking around the outside diameter of the injector body you will have to lap (sand and wet sand) the sealing / mating surface (the surface that touches the heat shield) and get new heat shields.
Where did you get your 1.9 cam plate?
Thanks folks,
I hope to have some time this weekend to wrap this thing up.
While I'll always wish for a Rabbit again, I gotta say, this Samurai will be a blast and will be practical for the terrible roads around here (bad mud season, snow, etc)
I got the camplate from Volkswa parts, other stuff from there as well.
Yea, I should have lapped those pieces better, I think I'll do another set to have on hand.
This thing does some nice little donuts with that rear locker!
