Lots of pedal travel before engine picks up
« on: July 17, 2008, 08:19:55 pm »
I recently bought a 93 Eco diesel Passat, and the first thing I noticed when I drove it is that the accelerator pedal needs to be pushed a fair way down before the engine speed increases. I checked the cable adjustment, and the rack lever starts to move as soon as the pedal is stepped on. I can move the rack lever almost half of it's travel, and the engine speed hardly increases. The PO said he'd recently replaced the "throttle shaft seal" (for want of a better term), and I wondered whether he'd reinstalled the rack lever in the wrong place? The idle speed is correct though, and I haven't yet checked the max speed. Any ideas?

Yup sounds like it is installed a couple teeth off.

Not to hard to fix really, you dont need to remove the nut all the way, just loosen and use a small flat head screw driver to turn the shaft. You have to wiggle and lift up on the lever to get it off the splines then use the screw driver. Does that make sense? I dont understand what I just wrote so.....
Leave the nut on the last thread or so then the lever wont spring off and get all screwed up.

Thanks. I got it fixed yesterday. It only took about 15 min, but what a difference!
