Clear Diesel Fuel lines
« on: July 16, 2008, 03:01:53 pm »
I'm trying to find some clear fuel lines so I can test the pump in my 1.6.... but none of the autopart stores stock it. Is there something else I can use. I would prefer something that will hold up over time as I plan on using them in the car permanent after the test.

I'm using clear (ish) Blue line I bought from the motorcycle shop and I'm using what the hose place called "Ether tubing" for the returns off the injectors. That stuff is clear and has been there for a bit over 1000 miles now.

Yes, you can get the urathane tube at any motorcycle shop. It comes in Blue and yellow, works great and stays soft. I have had mine on my 91 ECO for over three years now and 40k miles and it is just like the day I put it on.  I use, I think 3/16 semi truck air brake line for the injector cross over lines. It works great as well. Both are BIO safe.

I didn't think of the air brake lines...

I used 1/8" clear for the injectors. I was looking tonight and it looks like a couple may be weeping. I heated the ends when I put them on and I think they stayed stretched out due to the heat, there are a couple that I didn't heat just to try and those are not leaking.
I'm going to replace the leaking ones this weekend and not heat the ends.
Also when I say leak it as I said earlier, more of a weep. the injector is wet around the nipple but it's not leaking enough to actually run down the injector the base's are dry.

The oem stuff is nylon. I recall reading somewhere that diesel will attack the Poly stuff.

You can order it directly from McMaster Carr. Its rock hard, just like the original stuff.

Here is the schmidt:

Part No. 8359K15
25' length: $12.50
Description: High-Strength Clear Nylon
Tubing .242" ID
5/16" OD
.035" Wall Thickness

You have to warm the ends up to get them to slide over the hose barbs. Heat the ends till they just start to get plyable, then firmly ram the hose onto the barbs.

Its allot easier if you take the barb nerds off the pump and filter housing while your installing the new fuel line on them.

No leaks yet after 3 months.  Here it is on my 1.6TD:

Here is some small diameter nylon that might work for the return lines. Might be a little stiff though. Its dirt cheap, so trying it won't be too expensive. Viton might be a better choise for the return lines.

Part Number: 8365K22
1-99 Ft. $0.61 per Ft.
100 or more $0.45 per Ft.
