Cruise/Speed control on 86 Golf Diesel
« on: July 12, 2008, 05:42:10 pm »
This is the best forum ever.
About a month ago I bought a used deisel Golf with a lot of little problems.  I have fixed most of it thanks to reading all your posts.  I still have a couple of quandries though:

The cruise/speed control does not work.  The led light comes on when you roll the rocker switch to "ON".  The fuse isn't blown.  But the cruise won't "Set" or "Resume"
Any suggestions on where to start looking?
Thanks Again,
PW

check for vacuum leaks going to the actuator.  the rubber tends to get hard & brittle and develops cracks.  best way is probably to get a vacuum gauge hooked up to it (the actuator is right on the pump... looks like a round ball) and see if it moves the accel cable/lever.  if its just a small leak you could probably fix it with some rubber cement and a rubber patch.  no need to buy a new one for x amount of dollars  8)

also i think the cruise only works past 45-50km/h?  you probably already knew that, but just in case i thought i'd share

it does seem kinda weird doesn't it?   '86 does seem like a weird year... i had an '86 jetta GLS without cruise.  but with good reason.   it would have required some serious electronics on the car or risk blowing a head gasket trying to accelerate in 5th gear

cars with cruise generally have shorter gears.  my car can stay in 5th from 60 on up.  good for cruising around town too, but the highway rpm's are just too high for me.  3100 at 100km/h? wayyy too high!
