Removing IP pulley and crank v-belt pulley?

I'm currently stripping a 1.6td. Reading my bentley manual it says I need a special tool to remove the IP pulley. I havent loosened anything yet apart from the injector lines at the injectors.
Can anyone give me tips on how to remove the pump using normal tools, as I cannot afford the £60 to buy a single tool to remove the pulley.
Also having removed the four bolts from the crank v-belt pulley, I cannot remove it to access the TB cover bolts. Is there something i'm missing or is it just stuck?
thanks

I use a two jaw puller to pull the gears off the IP and Cam. Seems to work just fine.

I think it may be just stuck on Wil... Just stripped a 1.6td myself , after loosening the IP bolt , the pulley tapped carefully off with a wooden mallet, was tight but it came . PS I assume you are in the UK , where did you get the Bentley manual from ?

managed to get the crank belt pulley off today using a set of pullers I bought. havent taken off the ip as i'm not sure whether it needs to come off yet.
I got my bentley manual off ebay, completely by chance, the first time I looked the right one was on there. I did pay £35 for it though but i'd say worth it.

If you are replacing the timing belt I usually hit it with a hammer while prying with a screwdriver against the back of the pulley. It usually pops right off. carefull not to lose the key

Quick question, which way does the IP nut loosen. I'm trying to loosen it counter clockwise like normal but it will not come off. does it need more force or am i doing it wrong.
I'm using a socket extender to lock the ip in place, it is actually a tighter fit than the proper tool.
thanks

I got sick of them not coming off easily, so I bought the tool from VW, much easier now.

It loosens like most other nuts: counter-clockwise.
If you don't have the proper puller, you can use a trick I did in a pinch once. After you've loosened the IP nut about 4 turns (DON'T REMOVE IT YET), completely remove the 4 13mm-head mounting nuts and bolt to the whole IP so that it's flopping around. Then, set the back edge of the sprocket against the mounting bracket. Gently support the IP with one hand, and then give a solid smack to the center pin of the IP with a dead-blow hammer (not a sledge or other metal hammper). It should pop the sprocket off. THen, remove the 19mm nut, and carefully pull out the woodruff key.
