Hey folks.

I drive a 91 VW 1.6 NA, soon to be swapped for a 1.6TD, but thats a different story.

So I drive my car alot, relatively hard, I recently had the pump rebuilt about 20k kms ago... at about half tank mark, i'm at 300kms. Seems I'm getting about 25 MPG...
Fuel Economy
9.17   litres per 100 km
25.66   miles per US gallon
30.82   miles per Imperial gallon

I had Tyler drive my car, and take a look at the pump, he said it looked like one or 2 of the lines were leaking as the pump looked wet...

What sort of MPG should I expect of my 1.6na? With Diesel in Ontario at about 1.40 a litre I want to make sure I'm getting what I can out of my car... What can I do to increase efficiency? Injectors and tighten the fuel lines to the pump?

Thanks!

Joe-

if i drive like the majority of the motorist here in california, i get 44-45 mpg.
but if i drive like granny then the best i got is 49 mpg. ( 60-65 miles per hour )
luckily my injector pump shows no sign of leakage anywhere. and my transmission is stock. rolling on 155/R13 tires. over 90% of my driving is freeway.

fuel leak anywhere on the car, transmission gear ratio, tires, normal driving habits are some of the variables that contribute to the overall economy you will get in return out of the 1.6 non turbo diesel.

not sure what's the difference between US and imperial gallons.
i usually go by total distance traveled and amount of fuel used every fill-up.

Tyler said I had the "Crappy" Tranny, as opposed to the taller one...I'm pretty sure I redline at about 140kmph.
No mods to the pump, I've read in other posts that the metal fuel lines to the pump rarely leak and that the seals have to be redone, but I just had the pump remand this past winter.... but the pump is wet with fuel it looks like...can those be tightened?

My 92 1.6 TD will do about 470 km to a half tank and will get another 375 km or so out of the rest of the tank. The whole tankful I average about 38 mpg so I know that means I get over 40 on the highway, probably low to mid 30's in town. I also have a crappy tranny (AWY) which is probably taking off 4 or 5 mpg from my average fuel mileage. Your 25 mpg average sounds quite low to me. Are you carrying any extra weight like a lot of tools or something? How's the air pressure in your tires? Change your oil lately? Brakes dragging? If possible, try driving slower, accelerating slower and upshifting a bit earlier. Oh, toss a bottle of a good fuel system cleaner like Powerservice Diesel-Kleen or Redline Diesel Fuel Catalyst (both available at Canadian Tire) if you haven't done so for a while.

Before I had my perfomance pump and still had the crappy AWY (same as yours zozep) I was getting about 5.7l/100kms. Now with a taller tranny and the perfomance pump I am getting about 4.8l/100kms. I always have at least 200 pounds of stuff in the car, like my engine hoist :? I'm also driving about 120 on the highways.

You should definitly be getting better mileage.

On your car it looks like the union between the pump (delivery valve) and the steel lines are leaking. Take a 17mm wrench and tighten them up a bit, not much.

I'd bet a lot of it has to do with your injectors.

Nope, nothing in the car aside from a sub in the back that probably weighs about 50 lbs. I rarely have anyone in the car, and I usually don't break 120kmph...I average about 100kmph.
My oil is changed regularly between 5000-7000 kms, tire pressure is usually between 29-31 psi as per the info on the tires, and what it suggests for half load on the sticker inside the door.
I put a bottle of that injector cleaner, cetane boost stuff every 2-3 tanks in srping and summer time winter, i usually put one in every tank.

Tyler saw the leaking lines that he mentioned tightening, not sure how much that has to do with it...probobly not much.

So injectors is the next thing to change.... I should be getting 8-900kms a tank not 600....

Your timing could also be off.

How much do you want to invest in the engine though? It may not be in there for all that long

I am surprised to hear the fuel economy some people are reporting on this forum.  With my 86 Golf, I would always get over 1000km on the highway.  On the way back from Mexico with mine, I managed to get 1140km out of the tank from Anaheim CA to Ashland OR the needle wasn't even in the Orange.   great shot showing gas gauge. I know the VW gauges aren't the most accurate but still great.

Just a quick warning, you said that you put a whole bottle of that Power Service diesel supplement in the tank in the winter time? Be careful, they only call for about 2-3 oz. of that per tank!
