Aww, ran out at 852 kms
« on: July 08, 2008, 09:16:30 pm »
I filled the tank a few days ago and reset the trip meter, I wanted to see how far I could get on that $80 dollar fill up! I was driving today coming towards a hill....when I felt the engine start to die. It picked up and ran fine for another few seconds then started dying again. It rolled to the top of a little hill then I tried restarting it. The engine cranked but no kick. Ahhhh damn, why does that always happen to me when I'm only another minute or two away from a gas station?? I thought I was screwed for sure. I grabbed the bottle of PowerService Diesel-Kleen I had, poured in the tiny bit that was left and it started back up! Idle was rough though. I immediately set out for the gas station. I didn't know how much longer the car would run, so I'd get it up to speed then turn the engine off going down small hills. I managed to coast into the gas station and put 10 bucks in the tank (not even 2 US gallons!) and drove home. The idle was still a bit rough but it cleared up after a few minutes. I'm kinda disappointed with the distance I got out of the tank of fuel. I was hoping for 900 km or more. I suppose my AWY tranny doesn't help much. Is 850 km on a single tank decent?

850 to a tank is fairly average. Assuming that your tank is 55 litres, you got 15.45KM/L or 43.6MPG Imperial.

I get about the same  :)

Yesterday, filled up - 47.81L, 881km

Have went as high as 998km on about 53 and change liters.

I'm almost positive I could hit 1000 kms in my 91 NA golf but I get scared as soon as it hits the red and fill up. That's usually 900 kms

I can get 700miles/tank (always between 40 and 41mpg) in my '06 Golf and that's with the PD TDI engine and the Tiptronic 5speed automatic.  I do have to admit though it's nice to have the low fuel warning light and alarm, when that goes off I know I've got about 70 to 90 miles left before the big E gets me.  I can't wait to see what my 1.6L TD Jetta will get on the highway since my roundtrip commute is 120miles/day.

'06 Golf TDI traded in for a '12 Jeep Rubicon (the Phatbox is available)
'91 Jetta TD, a work in progress (I'll do a build thread when I start in earnest)

Infinitrium:

You didn't mention what your car was nor how it was filled, but at $80 you are either driving an A4 that was vented or a B3 that was not.

850 kms for an A4 with a manual trans is not very good.  For example: last week, my dear wife followed me in my FLD120, which cruises just under 70 mph.  I got to point out to her that is was the first time since buying the car 100k miles ago that she ever drove it any distance even CLOSE to the speed limit.  That was good for 1160 kms before the light went on ('03A4 Variant, vented).  I drove back between 140 and 160 kph, and that tank went 950 kms.  She is overdue for intake cleaning (never done, needs it) and engine is stock - chasis a bit lower but with fat/soft  rubber.
lifetime VW enthusiast, racer, fixer, addict, etc.
'03 TDI Variant, MkII Golf Country, Mk1 and II Scirocco (gassers), a Vanagon aircooled, an Audi 2.0 TD waiting to become a Porsche TD (in my M471 924), FLD120/DDEC IV, Ford 7.3/450, Iveco D220 and some 6D14T Mitsus and a few more.

i roughly get around 750-850km's per tank in my 92 td. but one time i filled it up as much as possible... shook the car.. and then filled it more until it just wouldn't go down.. then drove extremely..."tame" (i guess that's the best way to describe it) shifting between 1800-2500 max (i idle at about 1050rpm) with a lot of highway but also some city in there too..

that tank i got over 1000.. i wanna say almost 1200 but i can't remember the actual number cuz it was a while ago so im just going to say 1000+

driving like that is extremely hard for me to do so i just settle for the roughly 800 i get per tank driving anywhere from normal to likes it's hot :P

i have two mk2 td's and their fuel guages don't act the same. my daily i can bury the needle below the E and the other one i figured would be the same until i was at the side of the highway once it was in the red.

i suggest you grab some diesel in a portable tank, and maybe a booster pack too incase you can't get it to start right away and you start cranked slow or not at all.. then see where your needle is when you run out. at least then you wont be stranded and you won't get nervous once you hit the red.
