hi everyone,
i have a question to all the diesel dubbers here. first of all i'm very sad because of what has happened to the price of diesel lately. i drive a 1987 golf diesel non-turbo and i have plans on using wvo in the near future. a close friend of mine can hook me up with a constant supply of used cooking oil from her restaurant.
i've done some research lately from other biodiesel/veg. oil forums. and well aware of the settling, filtering, and de-watering of the waste oil. i was tempted to ask those guys the following questions but they all seem to drive powerstroke and cummins engines and i don't want to get ridiculed for driving a 1.6 four banger. so here i am.

question#1) is it safe to mix 10% wvo into the main tank every fill up(1 gal. wvo/ 9 gal. diesel#2).? i don't want the complicated and expensive set-up of having dual tanks.

question#2) is there a long term concern regarding the health of my injector pump seals, with such a small percentage of wvo mixed into the main tank.?

question#3) what else do i need to be aware of in order to successfully run wvo/diesel mix all year round in my main tank.?

short answer , build yourself a 2 tank system , so the veg oil is around 180 degree's f  , at the injector  .

by testing spray patterns , it apears that up to 30% veg oil can be mixed with diesel without making a huge difference in the spray pattern ( the dropletts are a bit bigger ).

you need to filter the oil to at least 5 microns ,  and figure out how to  seperate the water out of it  ( i have been heating it in a 20 gallon barrel with a electric hot water tank element in it  , then running it through a special hydralic oil filter designed to remove water , then through a convential water seperater and then a 5 micron filter .

the veg oil won't hurt your injection pump , but rather damage your engine , if it doesn't completely burn before it hits the cylinder walls , then getting into the rings while it's burning , causing the engine oil to burn  .
it also has a effect of severly  gumming up and glueing the rings to the pistons , and valves into the guides .

the key is figuring out how to make it completely burn in a similar way that diesel burns
1990 jetta , tweaked pump , tweaked turbo , ported head  2.5inch exhaust .

1993 dodge w250 , diesel ... removing the dead moose parts .

there shouldn't be a problem with 10% veg as long as you filter it properly.

thanks for the feedback guys

i willl start out with the 10% wvo/ 90% diesel on the main tank and go from there but eventually go up to 30% wvo mix to offset the total bill at the pump which is my main goal. :wink:

also, don't take the car on long trips without carrying a spare fuel filter, and a means of re-priming the engine. better safe than sorry  :wink:
