pros and cons on frankenmotors
« on: July 04, 2008, 04:37:03 pm »
I've got a freshly rebuilt AAZ with a T3 in my '97 jetta.  I also have a complete running 1.6TD ( minus IP ) in my garage.
question is, which will produce more power/torque?  the AAZ or the 1.6 with AAZ head and IP ?

supposedly the 1.6 has better revvability than the 1.9, and the 1.9 has a better flowing head than the 1.6.

combined, i'm sure the 1.6 could have some mega potential, but the cold starting will suffer.

if everything is good and tight (practically rebuilt motor) it should start like a worn 1.6 in the cold.  as long as the GP's are good it shouldn't be a problem.  the bigger valves in the 1.9 will really help wake up the motor.

the AAZ alone will produce more torque than the 1.6 + aaz head combo.  the 1.6 *may* produce more HP if you mod the pump correctly though (governor)...

i would just stick with the AAZ though... you wouldn't want to mess around with a fresh motor, unless you were seriously hardcore and have some extra money to throw around.

do some searches for malone's franken motor.  he had some good results with it, however chrissev tried it and had very poor results.. so much that he got rid of his car and bought a chevy cobalt  :?

u need more advanced timing as well.  i don't think cold starting is really a problem with them, u only go down from 23 to 20 or so, still very high.

cold start is not a problem seeing as I have a winter beater ie: '98 Tercel to get me through -10 or nmore celceus.

money is however a bit of a factor, I can spent about 2K and would like to end up with a MK2 jetta to drop engine into. I'm trying to find a good setup for 1/4 mile, the idea is to build a sleeper that will smoke the doors off fart can ricers. :)

any ideas on what would need to be done to hit low 14 second runs?
