First diesel first dumb question.

I have an 86 jetta Diesel non turbo with a leaking injection pump. I am sending it up to Giles to be re-done with a performance build and everything... Should I have him rebuild it it for a turbo application seeing how I want to turbo my 1.6.

I know that the TD's have oil cooled pistons and the N/A's don't. Is this fixable?

What are the other differences between TD and N/A?

I'm sure this is covered but I tried searching and got nowhere!

but anyways, you need to have the pump LDA (turbo pumps have it and non turbo's don't) if you want Giles to build you a turbo pump.  i'm not sure if he has any lying around, but i'm sure he would want some more $$$ for it.  its really up to you if you want it.  non turbo's have successfully been converted to turbo's, but more care has to be given while driving, and an EGT gauge a necessity if you want to 'push' it.

turbo exhaust gas temp can reach 1600F  for short periods and still be fine.  on a non turbo this would probably either burn the valves or do some serious damage to the pistons.

Basically with a turbo on a NA you are shortening that engines life. By how much all depends on how you drive it and how well you maintain safe oil temperatures as well as EGT temps
