the alternator adjusting bracket on my 85 has no teeth that allow you to adjust the belt tension. i suspect this was not how it was originally made but that the PO rigged it up after loosing, breaking or whatever the origninal bracket. can anyone conform this or even direct me in the direction of where i could acquire an appropriate bracket? the junk yards are prety worthless around here for vw diesel stuff like that (whenever they have diesels they sell the engines complete) and i haven't found any gasser brackets that work. i guess it's not a big deal, but this weekend i was reminded about what a pain it is to have to get an extra person pry on the alternator with a crow bar while i have to torque down the bolt good and tight so it doesn't slip free
85 should have the teeth, pre 84 didn't, I think.
my 85 has no teeth on the alt bracket.
I use a crowbar to pry the alternator up, then tighten the crap out of the top. this keeps it tight just long enough to get a ratchet on the bottom bolt and finish tightening it.
the alternator belt starts to develop slack after 30 mins of driving the car though, so I feel your pain. I really need to get my hands on a toothed bracket as well...
I don't know whether you
want to spend the money, or not,
but you can get a
new bracket and
the special notched bolt at
www.altrom.com The bracket is part#026903247B - (about $20)
The bolt is part#034903555B - (about $3)
