1.5 in a MG Midget?
« on: May 12, 2005, 06:35:43 pm »
There's a guy selling an old MG Midget for $200 - he says the engine is rusted out and probably no good.  I have access to a cheap marine VW engine that was pulled from a sailboat for a re-power, likely needs a head gasket.  Any idea if I can stuff the 1.5 into the midget?  Tranny issues or anything?  I've never done anything remotely like this, but it would be fun to have a biodiesel MG to drive this summer for cheap...

Well, that's a rear wheel drive car. You'll need to find a bellhousing/clutch /trans that will work. that's the tough part. after that, there's mounts, plumbing, wiring, and the driveshaft. There's some posts somewhere about an adaptor kit to use toyota driveline parts, probably your best bet. Never know, someone might make an adaptor to put a volks engine on the midget tranny..............

my friend has a 1970 midget and its got a 1.25L in it. theres not a whole lot of room for play under the hood and the transmission is tucked up so far under the car that you have to access its fill tube from the inside of the car. as far as squeezing the 1.5 in it MIGHT be possible but i would recommend you measure before you buy. like i say theres very little extra space under the hood

The 5 banger VW diesels have a sifferent bolt pattern than the 4 bangers, and I read here that the 6 has the same pattern as the 5, in short, no.
