aaz conversion / pulley question
« on: June 21, 2008, 09:58:26 am »
I'm in the process of a 1997 aaz 1.9 TD IDI conversion into a 1991 Tracker.
I'm thinking of removing all of the original serpentine pulleys and going to older 1.6 "V" bely pulleys for simplification of using Tracker powersteering, and alternator. I'd be swapping the waterpump pulley over to V belt also.

Now, the crank pulley I've been looking at is off a mid-late 80's 1.6 TD It is not a vibration damper like the original one from the 1.9, just a V pulley.
Can this be used? Is a vibration damper required on the 1.9? What effect will running the engine without the heavier vibration damper be?

All of the 1.6er's i've seen had a vibration damper with v-belt pully(s) built on to it.Are you sure this is just a pully?

Perhaps only the later 1.6ers got a vibration damper??

The 1.6s with no PS and no AC did not have a vibration dampener, it was just a metal pulley

My AAZ had the damper with a V belt pulley that bolted in front. I think this would be your best bet, especially with the AAZ crank pulley problems. However depending on where you are planning to put the alt, you might want the serp belt going at least to it, like if the alt is going on the passenger side of the engine. There will be very little crank pulley contact in this configuration. Mine slipped all the time. I ended up adding an idler pulley for the water pump to tighten the v belt, and ran a serp to the alt.

Thanks for the replies.

Andy.......no, I'm not sure it's just the pulley, sure looked like it though at a glance. It's sitting at the auto wreckers......

Burn.......thanks for the info, it helps.

Jimfoo.......I'm trying to get away from the serpentine belts and run v belt for the H20 pump, alt, and the powersteering pump. *I'm planning on going with the oem vw aaz powersteering pump, H20 pump, and a vw alt. The alt will be mounted in the stock position on the drivers side [ with the bracketry from this same 1.6 TD I plan on getting the pulleys from.......I'm told that the alt bracketry from this 1.6 TD will work on my aaz ], along with the H20 pump and powersteering, all on the drivers side.*

ACME offers a GM 105 amp alt and bracketry that mounts on the passenger side.........is this what you're running? Slipping problems? V belt or serpentine?

Essentially, what I'd like to know is, will there be any adverse effects with running just a pulley on the aaz crank without a vibration damper? What difference will it make?

The crank face on my aaz is in pristine shape.
