Just wondering if anyone has any recommendations for springs and shocks for off road rally type driving for the A1 chassis. it's for a 79 rabbit.

For my Rabbit TD, I am fitting the Springs off of a Cabriolet. The higher weight, therefore higher spring rate, should raise my car just a bit. I have the springs, I just have to get around to fitting them.

My friend has a rally rabbit. It is a gasser though.

He says:

Get Bilstein Rally Struts, get them without Spring sleeves.

Get standard 2.5" coilover sleeves (he uses Ground Control, but any manufacturer will work).

Solid mounts are not necessary, stock mounts work fine and tend to be better for the body (chassis).

You will need to reinforce the front strut towers around the top.

He uses Eibach springs 275lbs/11" in the front and 175lbs/10" in the rear (he uses the extra length to get the height w/o having to go big on the spring rates)(he tried 250/150, too soft and 300/200 much too stiff)

The real issue is the lower control arm mounting points. Stock they need to be pushed back into place and rewelded after EVERY rally. He has a bar welded between both lower control arm mounts now. There are other ways to brace them up, but they must be braced or they will fail.

Road Rally....are you talking like a time/distance rally or full on rally? they are MUCH different in car setup.

i agree with most of what was said above, i do the engine tuning on the Demon Rally rabbit (demonrally.com) an they use bisteins hd's valved for rally, mk2 springs up front with one coil cut, an rear stock rabbit springs.

they consistatly run in the top 10 overall, an last season in Michigan took home the group 2 win. its a very good setup

put mk2 sturts and springs in it. You get about a 3 inch lift and alot stiffer spring rate.

Ohh, wow! Spring rates!

Thanks for all of the excellent info. I was thinking to myself when I was under the car that it looked like it needed a brace on the front control arm mounting, didn't know it was that important. Glad I don"t have to find out the hard way.
I'm not doing anything professional, but I do love to go thrash the VW off road and I want to jump it too. I'm thinking the coil over setup will best suit my driving needs.
