hey,
I have a 1.6ltd in my car right now.  I have the chance to pick up a 1.9ltd for really cheap except the head is toast :( anyway i have a 1.6td hydrolic lifter head in my garage collecting dust and was wondering if the 1.6l head will fit on a 1.9l block, and if i did this would i find any increase in power of the complete 1.6l?

I think it'd work. BUT... The 1.6L has smaller intake valves. I bet the effect would be a stronger bottom end torque, say til 3000, and a very choked off higher end. Would be better to have the head repaired if possible and jam it on a 1.6L

i wasnt planning on throwing anything away if i get the car.  i dont want to spend too much money on it because i have a scirocco out back and theres a written off 03 jetta TDI localy that I want to get to put into the scirocco.  Its a lot of work but it would be a fun car once its done :D

Here's one that'll make you guys sick.   :twisted:

I am able to get a Jetta 1995 1.9TD with 180,000km on it for 250 bucks but it's more or less a long block.  Would I be able to dress it in 1.6NA parts?  I think I'll have to toss the turbo and injector pump that's on the engine due to a mishap involving a fire and an aftermarket stereo.  :lol:   Basically, picture this thing with only the vacuum pump left as origional.  Will everything line up on the cam belt?  The reason I'd do this is that my 1.6 is down to 340/360 PSI so it's dying.

ps.  I could look into buying the engine/tranny and subframe with steering rack to part out if there is interest.  I would prefer to have people come pick the parts up in Sudbury if they are big.  The head on this engine is supposed to be new but it's hard to tell due to the fire...

I have a couple 1.9's w/ 1.6 hyd heads / intakes.

all fits x-cept timing cover, I use steel ones from A1's (need to fab 16mm offset bracket), and exhaust is 16mm taller in 1.9 (need to tweak your header pipe)

run fine, significant improvement in torque, probably would be better performance with 1.9 'D' intake and head, but I don't notice a difference when comparing with stock 1.9's (IDI's)

It's good to hear somebody has done this.  The head should be fine so I'll try to get it going without removing it.  Which timing belt did you use when you put the 1.6 head on?

Have you tried to put in the older 1.6 oil pump and vacuum pump?  They are a bit of an item due to the change in drive engagements.  

The oil pan gasket is really expensive on the AAZs too...I'll have to see if I can use my old 1.6 pan and get a new gasket for that instead.

that sounds kinda cool - try it and lets see what happens!
Now: 00 2dr Golf TDI, 03 Jetta Wagon TDI, 02 2500HD Duramax - :)
Then: 69 SC Transporter, 84 Rabbit GTI, 87 Fox GL, 91 Golf IDI, 96 Passat Wagon TDI, 97 Jetta IDI - :(

Parts Place has a 1.9 liter pamphlet that covers putting a 1.6 head on a 1.9 block among other things. It runs about $6.00. It is worth the money.

They also have a selection of 1.9 blocks and engine parts. Be very sure of what you want before ordering anything from them.

you use a specific belt for 1.9, more teeth/longer (-P instead of -F, I think) (BTW intermediate shaft pulley is smaller too)
The hole in block for vac pump is different dia on 1.9 (bigger)
Oil Pan gasket for 1.9 is likely "windage tray" (rubber + metal splash shield) ~$25.  you can use a molded gasket ~$10 or the generic gasket ~$2.  pans should be same

where do you get your gaskets. i'm looking to replace mine and went to the dealership and it was something like 30 bucks for my 84 1.6, and i get parts for cost.

The 1.6 has the same sized valves, but the ports are smaller.  The 1.9 has the "D" ports.

I just finished rebuilding a 1.9 head (keyway disaster) and I used the same parts as I used on the last 1.6 head I rebuilt.  The later 1.9's have 7mm valves and guides, but the earlier ones use the same valvetrain as the hydro 1.6 TDs.

My plan is to put a 1.9 head on a 1.6 block to improve airflow.
