Advanced timings = bad??
« on: May 30, 2008, 05:46:14 am »
Hey guys!!

I was just wondering if advanced ip timings are bad for the engine??

I fulled advanced the fuel pump timings of my friends 1,6 NA..  i dont know what the timings are now cuz i dont have a gauge.

The engine sounds a bit harsh now but it has made a lot of difference in the acceleration.

Please let me know about the adverse effects... if any.

All comments are welcome.

Thankss!

how skilled are you at changing the headgasket ?

before you start playing you should have the tools to measure things  to know what your doing  instead of guessing .

You won't get it back where it was, but you definitly should try and make an effort to. You can put holes in the pistons from too far advanced timing. What was the reasoning for advancing it?

At least bring it back enough to quiet the engine down. If you smoke and miss you've gone too far. I think of it this way, if it is far too advanced, the piston will ignite the fuel before reaching TDC. Think of the stress on the rods, bearings, piston tops, etc. Not good.

Too far advanced and the piston will be trying to compress the already expanding gasses. As you can imagine that puts a LOT of stress on the pistons and rods.

And will cause you to burn oil.  I had mine at about 1.05 mm and was burning 3.5 qts per 1,000 miles.  I put it to .95mm and it now only burns about 1 qt per 1,000.  There are probably some other issues involved, but I was amazed that it did that, so I would not advance it much past 1mm is probably the limit.

might have been because of the extra combustion pressure leaking past the rings and further pressurising the crancase...

speaking of Pakistan and DTI - I had a gauge adapter custom made for me by my handy machinist when I lived there, and I bought a dial gauge to stick it in the end of it - worked a doddle - and I would double the comment of blow and oil consumption too. timing really really matters for these engines.
