hey guys,
been a while since i posted on here - been busy making money, and never enough time to play with the cars, bah. anyhoo, i have done a few things to the AAZ mk3 lately, the biggest of which was my new 2.5" mandrel bent exhaust system...pics:

fitted downpipe

the rest of the exhaust

all in MS, since i think using stainless for an exhaust here in sunny australia is totally pointless.... anyway, its sooo quiet since the k14 outlet is so small i suppose, i was a little dissappointed in the lack of noise...

on the plus side, it seems ot have made a big difference to the torque output - much better everywhere and a lot happier reving than before. its actually quieter than stock in cruising throttle range too, but does have a bit of a note on boost.

i'm considering ditching the k14 for a new k04 - does anyone have any experience with this combination? it feels like the k14 isnt big enough, i run out of boost in a hurry after 3600rpm, and i have the 1.6TD boost pin and the fuel screw in a bit... it just seems to run out of puff. at the moment it tops at 17psi and that drops to about 10-11 at 4000rpm. do i just need to be braver with my boost controller or what?

im also wondering if maybe its all in the pump - ought i do the governor mod instead? i havnt touched the governor as yet...

any advice?

do we yet have a forum consensus about hte governor mod?

i have read all the "how to"'s but honestly it seems like theres still mixed opinions about what to actually change with the governor mod.

if anyone has done governor mods to their aaz and have good results, post here what you did.

i shimmed both springs , rather than remove the one spring and make it  solid .

as of some tweaking a couple days ago , it fuels really hard untill 4800-4900 rpm , then just cuts out really hard .

the longer spring is shimmed around 1/16 of a inch , the  shorter one is shimmed about 1/8 of a inch .

i've also completely backed off on the screw that limits  the total linkage travel ..... the one on the top of the pump ... the opposite screw can be used to set the idle .
1990 jetta , tweaked pump , tweaked turbo , ported head  2.5inch exhaust .

well, i will be going with the governor mod then, soon enough. i might pull down my 1.6TD build pump first and do that one, as it has no effect on my daily driving - so practice.

yesterday i fitted my new intercooler piping setup - im using a pug 'cooler underbonnet with ducting, and i decided there were a couple of too tight rubber bends in the setup, so in a blind rush after work friday night, in 2 hours i had a couple of new pipes made from some scrap:

this is the new setup. i have reversed the flow through the 'cooler....because it wa convenient.....no other reason really.

i also de-EGR'd the thing, after discovering a good 3-4mm of black goo crud buildup on the inside walls of the cast alloy inlet pipe, and on the insides of the inlet manifold. the blakc crud is clearly a nice mixture of oil and soot, so no more EGR for me :) you can soo a little of the blanking plate i made up on the inlet manifold. I also made a blanking plate for the exhaust manifold, which i figure is a perfect spot to put an EGT sensor!

since i couldnt pull the inlet mani without taking off the turbo too, i left the crud in there for the moment - suffice to say its high on the list of things to do now though.

NOW - some interesting observations.

i did drive the car around for a day with no intercooler while i was sorting some stuff, and noted that the boost peaked at 20psi (k14) and it would break traction in 1st in dry weather, just by planting it while rolling.... but there was definately less drivability in the power, it felt like there was much less pull at lower rpm.

with the new pipes fitted, im sure its a bit better than with the old setup - less lag, and more oomph, which is nice. also, i noted last night after coming home from a good drive and lifting the bonnet, a much greater temp difference between the hot side and cold side intake pipes (either side of the 'cooler) so i guess the setup is working better with the reversedflow through the cooler - now runs from fron to back, or engine side to gearbox side with respect to the core.

old cooler setup pics for reference:

does anyone know if i can rotate the compressor housing on the k14?

Yes, just undo the 5 or 6 bolts and turn away.
