My 1.6na diesel bit the dust and ive sourced a 1.9 td engine out of a passat on the cheap.I could do with a little help with the swap, what exactly needs to be changed wiring wise, will my old gearbox fit,is there anything else i should look out for?any info/help appreicated
If it's a standard 1.9TD (not a TDi), then it will just drop right in, with no extra wiring issues, except for the alternator (just put the big red wire(s) on the large terminal), and wire up your glo plugs. There is a heating element on the CrankCase Breather Valve (CCV), right where the breahter tube enters the intake tube. You could live without it, or try to wire it up. Also, you may have a temp-controlled timing advance mechanism. I'm sure the wiring for that is pretty simple too, but I have not dealt with it.
Good Luck
will the exhaust work?
If you can put the mk2 TD upper downpipe on it will bolt up to the NA lower downpipe. If you have a K03 this is a bit trickoier because of a different downpipe flange.
Power steering (if equipt) is almost a direct swap, just use the 1.9 pump and the 1.6 lines.
Tranny bolts up no problem
thanks for the help guys is there anything else i need to know?
There's one more thing. Use the downpipe from the 1.9 if it will fit (depending what car it came out of) much neater.
Oh, and the other thing is you will be AMAZED at the difference in power if the 1.9 is in any kind of decent shape!
Ok thanks for the help,Just one more question,do i need any parts of the loom from the donor car?
The wiring is simple but the harness is quite different.... AAZ engines have a large circular multiconnector that bolts on to a bracket on the head... all of the engine wiring runs thru the connector (IP, glow plugs, oil pressure senders, etc etc)
So, you can snag the multiconnector with a pigtail from the donor car, or just delete the entire thing and run the original wiring to the various spots.
