i like the idea of using this device. getting the engine timed to the actual injection is way superior imo. wonder if there would be a way to adapt one to test each injector and see if one is opening at the wrong time or whatever.

I don't see why you couldn't do it to each injector as a test of the injector. Like if its slow or faster then others. Kinda would tell variance in pop pressures.

I have searched for a topic discussing the delivery valves, but the search engine returns almost every thread available...
I read on the 1.5D SAE paper that they were crucial to lowering the harsh noise of the diesel.
as I see them, they are only check valves with a set pressure for opening.
what are the effects of rising o lowering that pressure?
there is a video on youtube showing a merc working without them, real crappy, as expected, instead of a pulse, the injectors get a much longer flow, but without that sharp rising of pressure.
I guess we want them to open at the maximum pressure possible, but not as high that can cause damage to the IP -

Yeah, there are idiots out there who place a bid, then push the price way over the buy it now price. I don't see timing adapters on there very often, and usually they are much more. Just hope it works, though I could probably fix it if it doesn't as I have an electronics background.

Snap on sell one, but it's not CE approved so they don't sell it here in the UK, although they will sell it in the US, but they won't export it!
Mac tools make one, similar if not the same as the Snap on one.
I bought mine from InternationalTools in the UK, I think it's a Ferret 765 or something.
Not cheap, but in my line of work it will be worth it to have happy customers as it will speed up diagnostic time.

Im sure you will be able to get those cheaper in the US.
I will warn you, the Snap on one I have used in the past and the brand new one I have purchased, well, they are a little finiky, you have to clean the injector line up with some fine emery and sometimes just hold the Piezo clamp with one hand and use the timing light with the other, but I would rather that than nothing at all.
If you read my link, the adapter has already paid for itself in my eyes as it has saved me from either taking it to a Diesel specialist, or a pissed off customer, luckily customer watched over me and seemed happy that I had got to the bottom of his issues. -

Just a quick question about the ferret one. It talks about a 6mm line adapter? Do we need that for our vw's? or will be we fine with the 1/4 inch (6.35mm) one that it comes with??? thanks!

Jimfoo got a good price on his adapter,... $80 and free shipping.
I thought those had battery clips for the 12 volt car battery, looks like they are using an internal battery now.
I have the ferret 765,... got it on ebay with the 1/4" sensor.
It worked for awhile, then I asked a friend to clean up the fuel line with some sandpaper. I put it on the line and tightned down but couldn't get a signal, then I saw the crap crumbling from underneath. He only sanded the visible area on top.
I had tightened it so much trying to get it to work that the little plastic cap on the screw broke.
Couldn't get it to work again until lately.
I put it on the line and noticed it was clamped down on itself. I sanded the edge so when clamped on the line the sensor didn't clamp down on itself, it now clamps on the line and works great.
I did this after reading on here that 1/4" is a little bigger than 6mm.
The '84 Rabbit diesel flywheels I've seen have the timing degrees stamped into them.
As far as having a dial gauge, it's nice to record the setting where it runs best. -

i was eyeballing the one jimfoo got, but lately some of the stuff i've bought from ebay is junk. not too happy about that. us Canadians always get hosed with shipping... so much for free trade? eh? :roll: -
