Loose transmission CV output
« on: May 05, 2005, 02:50:37 pm »
Hey I am on a trip, and I am in Edmonton for a friends wedding, on the way out I noticed a slight vibration, over the last couple of days, it has turned from vibration to clunk clunk clunk. At first I thought it was the exhaust as the rear hanger had broken, but I took it to an exhuast shop and put in new hangers and it didn't change.

So I am on my way to ny friends whom is gettting married and I notice that the turbo is spooling slow and that the exhaust is loud. As well as when ever I coast, in gear essptially, I get the clunking sound with a bad vibration. When I am accelerating it is smooth. I get to his house pop the hood with the motor still running and rev it a couple of times and relaize that the turbo is very loose and the exhuast is leaking between the turbo and the manifold. I look at the CV's as a possible clunk reason and see that two of the bolts holding the CV's in place are backing out (on the long side) the driver side is still tight.

So this morning I jack up the car, and have a better look at the CV's the boots are fine and no play in the joints, I proceed to tighten the bolts in only two of which are loose, and realize that I can't turn the passenger side wheel all the way around it binds after about a half turn. The drivers side turns freeley. So I look into it closer and realize that the output to where the CV bolts too is loose and has play, the driver side has none.

I don't have my bentley manual with me, and I have never encountered a problem like this. Any help would be greatly appriciated as if I can't get it fixed I am going to have to have my car shipped home and fly, $$$$$$

Is there away to tighten the output flange??? do I have to drop the tranny?

I have the tools with me to replace  a CV, as well as I borrowed my uncles truck and trailer and moved the car to his shop. He owns a pipeyard and has a full mechanics shop (albiet for big rigs) that I can use in the evenings.

Anyone with idea's to get me home???

You need about 15 bucks in parts to fix that if the flange is sliding in and out of the gearbox.  The circlip probably broke and fell out if you are lucky.  If the gearbox seal fell out and let the clip tangle with the CV joint you'll also need an axle.  I'd pay somebody to fix it as you'll need a reasonable assortment of tools to pull the axle and squeeze the flange in.

Yeah, it sounds like the circlip failed. This can be fixed with the transmission in the car, but you need a "special tool" to press the flange back on (I'm assuming you have the "mini-slip" with the green sleeve on the passenger side seal).

It's not terribly difficult to fix, but you do need the right tools to do the job. The clip and puck seal in the drive flange are cheap. Actually, you would be better off to get the whole kit for the drive axle seal and replace the seal around the drive flange shaft as well.

I just played this game the other day and I used a miscellaneous bolt and an alternator tensioner to press the cv flange on and then pop the clip on. I've never seen the circlip fail though, that's a new one on me. If I were you I would put the car up in the air and unbolt the axle from the transmission and try and spin the wheel again to verify where the opposition is coming from. It's possible the opposition could be the wheel bearing as well. Sometimes those cv flanges are loose but don't show any signs of it. On the other hand, loose lug bolts can also cause a lot of noise and seemingly few symptoms aside from a lot of noise (seen that one before).

Don't mean to steal this thread but I'm in the process of changing my flange seals and I can't get them to press in. I keep bending the 1/4 bar stock that I have to press the flange.  Any suggestions? I can't get it to press in so I can release teh C clip.

You should be able to rip the clips out.  There is a conical washer behind them so the force against the clips is not huge.  I didn't compress the flanges until reassembly.  EDIT:  Do have the compressor in place to prevent the flanges from flying away on you.

p.s.  What was wrong with your gearbox DVST8R?
