A little help with I.D and suggestons please
« on: May 25, 2008, 04:04:28 pm »
Hi ALL,
New here,
been reading for weeks now but only just joined, as am now ready.............. and in need of some help.
My other half bought me this car about 7 years ago, it was a bit of a wreck, rusty etc. sadly i dont have the pics, but it was a bog standard golf GTI in its body but had this 1.6??????? diesel lump chucked in.
I owned the bodyshop that its pictured in now, my brother now runs it, so its back in to have a few bad bits of paint touched up. i stripped it and added new rear arches, front wigs, door skins, bonnet front panel. and other boddy mods.drove it fro around a years or so then its sat out the back of my house for 5 years and think its held up very well, just a few scratches.
with the paint/body being sorted........ im now about to start re-using the car and start the 5 year old project of sorting the engine!! lol

so im here hoping to get some help  .....

What engine you recon it is??, pics show it best i can, but can take others if needed for ID, pic of 'green ID plate' is off the turbo.
it came with a cooler and original mountings for it, so assume its the 'IC' model.

It used to run pretty well, almost keep up with my friends 1.8 8v gti, i got axo coilovers 205 rear tyres and 195 fronts and rear discs, so could out drive him to some degree

What would you guys recomend mods wise for a daily driver!! so dont want silly silly fast but want to definately liven the old girl up a fair bit without compramising the engine too much!
lets say id like to put 8V's to shame  :P  am i being over optomistic, enlighten me (pretty please) to what this sort of engineis capable of, as i have been struggling to get my head around what the engines types are in other posts, so trying to get an ID on mine so i know what im looking for. lol
i have an A1 garage to work in and will be making a new exhaust for it, prob 2.5 dia or possably 3inch. so tools etc arent a prob.

I have learnt loads from this forum!! really opened my eyes to that ickle engine under my bonnet   keep it up
Her she is.............

I can see this turning out to be an expensive friendship, again :P

SB? cheers for the input!!! why do you think that??? anything in perticular.

i have taken the numbers off the front of the block which are -068103374G - with '86' which is in a circle, so assume its an 86 model, but not sure if there are any other numbers on the engine, as one i cant remember, lol, and two its a bit dirty and covered in surface rust
it has a water cooled T2 turbo.....1.6L if that helps narrow it down a bit
Really wanna work out exactly what it is so i can start to plan some tweaking and possable upgrades.

any more thoughts from ANYBODY

Thanks :D

Heres my mk1 GTD

1.9 AAZ with T3 turbo,2.5" stainless i box system

Thanks for the replies!!!

Ok i shall look tomorrow when i can get in the garage to do a bit more work to the bodywork.
I see from your pics BERT that you dont have an IC, mine has the original bracket which would hold the cooler over the gearbox, i take it yours just doesnt have it??  what turbo do you have ???

BERT Your engine makes mine look a right mess lol yours is very tidy!!
im from hampshire (near portsmouth)

What mods is this engine, manifold, turbo capable of?, i found a mint T5 turbo in my local scrappy yesterday, just looking for ideas/inspiration.
What would you guys recomend now the engine has been 99% identified(till tomorrow for deffo) for upgrading and getting more power and  speed, it will be a daily driver so dont want to build anything too 'fragile' but definately want more power on tap.

im open to tuning ideas

thanks for the replies so far  :D

That isn't accurate. Here in Europe we have the following engine codes, which are as follows: JR, RA and SB. Let's say there are 2 turbo posibilities: water-cooled or not-water-cooled, and it has nothing to see with the turbo maker.

RA and SB intercooled engines used water-cooled turbos, from both makers: Garret (VW ref: 068 145 702 MX) and KKK (VW ref: 068 145 702 NX).

JR engines used the "old" turbo, which has no water cooling, again, using turbos from the two makers (VW refs: 068 145 702 X and 068 145 701 NX)

My JR engine (now intercooled), uses a KKK turbo. A friend's JR uses the Garret unit, and both share the same engine code.

Ok been in the workshop today and found the engine code off the block, it says CR 499760   so i went next door to the motor factors known for always telling you they know 'exactly' what part your asking for and then low and behold you get the wrong one, almost everytime :x .
So anyway thought they may be able to help ID the engine. they came back with.......... its a 'JR' engine sir???!!! so are they right???

Please help me work out what engine i have
Or have i answered my own question with CR code

oh......well..........the CR is a 54HP non turbo diesel, well your block is a non turbo diesel, the CY is a 70HP turbo diesel, the JR is a turbo diesel.
yours looks like a mk2 engine with the water pump to cool the turbo, maybe someone just built the engine with turbo bits?

Thanks again bert!!

AHH :( could the block 'be the same' more or less as a gtd/tdi ? weaker/stronger? piston sizes, bore/stroke? Affects on my plans for mild tune?...............

Really hoping this doesnt mean a new lump, so i can create a fast reliable DD     ????

thanks dude!

been surfing found this :!:    http://scirocco.cs.uoguelph.ca/gtd/about_gtd.htm

this is saying the JR engine is a turbo diesel  :?

the JR is a turbo diesel, look at my post above, its also a 70Hp,your CR is a non turbo bottom end,no oil cooling jets for the pistons as far as i know,
the head is different too, the turbo head is a better alloy and better valves,so i heard, not 100% though,

you could still have a very good daily driver, you can get more than 100bhp from that setup. but keep an eye on EGT and oil temps when hammering it.

you could keep up with a gti, but not for long if you want that engine to last.
