- just out of curiosity : is that thing a "must have" or can the opening in the engine case be safely tappered as is on the 1600 - with just a breather on the cam cover ?
I would think if you used the valve cover only, you may get excessive oil being blown out. They put it on for a reason as it would have been cheaper for them to leave it off.
I dont know why, but an ALH TDI, also PD motor have only the breather on the valve cover.
The only reason I think It's because these head have extra oil drain hole in it.
Be sure, the AAZ, 1Z, AHU bloc breather It's not for esthetic.....
Makes me wonder if I shouldn't re connect the elephant hose on my setup in the mk1 as right now I'm running the single outlet ALH style Old Navy CCV puck with a block off plate on the block vent. Oye...
Might have a ALH Old Navy CCV available if anyone is interested.
Its odd...because I remember on the 1.6 diesels... SOME utilized the vent on the block (run hose to CCV puck, then to air filter) and then some didn't and had a block off plate on the vent.

Thanks for these infos.
I thought the alternate displacements of the four pistons would cancel most of pressure variations within the crank case - but possibly the longer stroke of the 1900 created extra forces which implied that breather hose thing - and latter on suggested a modification on the ALH engine.
I do not fear (much) extra oil on top of the engine but oil circulation being constrained by adverse pressure forces would be a mess :?
- but if you (RabbitGTDguy) know "the" RabbitGTDJoe you should be able to confirm that it works for an m-TDI setup up to ... 120/130+ Hp ?
Is this ALH Old Navy CCV pictured below ?

Thanks again - I forgot this example !
heh...heh...
We are one and the same....thats my car...

and yes, thats the ALH Old Navy CCV on it. I put the Elephant hose and stock puck back on today to see if I can notice any differences...
May end up just selling my Old Navy CCV and either trying to find the 1z/AHU specific one....or maybe going with a Mahle ProVent.
We'll see. Oil change too today. Amsoil is getting DAMN expensive!!! I was told by the sales guy that the next order will be 15-20% more expensive per quart! Argh...going to get some more to shelve it for now...

maybe you should try getting their bypass filter system. the oil itself can go for over 100'000km's, but it is the soot that requires oil changing... in the long run it will pay for itself and the engine will last longer too
I've thought about that...and may do that.

oil circulation being constrained by adverse pressure forces ...
(just having mentionned this as the sole bearable rationale I could think of - for keeping it ...)
... but I saw there is a broad inner "tube" - within the engine - that plays the same role as this hose breather vent ...
( ... definitely thinking about taking this off and putting the 1600TD breather box instead.)
