The GTD I bought granny has a minor water leak somewhere. I'm starting to think it may be the coolant cap. Should there be a rubber/plastic washer on the cap?
The cap seems to screw directly onto the globe reservoir plastic on plastic. As I only drive Quantum/mk2 Passats they kept to the old style caps with a soft washer...
Not this new fangled stuff :shock:
No coolant crud anywhere and definitely nothing coming out of the exhaust...

There should be a rubber O-ring on the cap.
Look closely, though, it's not immediately
apparent.
As I recall, it's down below the threaded portion.

This is the actual cap. It takes about 5 turns to lock down whilst the old style 2 or 3.
Where I have ringed must surely require a seal due to the recesses I've labelled in yellow. Quite hard to turn all the way down but I guess it has been partly sealing via the threads :?

The seal is in it's place . You can see it in the center part. If you see coolant coming from the bottle it could be because the cap isn't sealing anymore , it's over heating , or you have a pressure leak [head gasket, etc] . If there isn't an obvious leak either the motor is burning it or could it be her heater core, does the defrost smell when the fan is on?[/i]

Now I see the seal... :shock: Thanks.
There is no obvious leak. No smell that I can detect; although I can still smell the turtle smelly thing that came with the car last year. The block is a little oily but I put that down at least in part to the split injector return line that developed but now cured.
No smoke of any kind on startup. This is easily the quietest TD of our family collection. I imagine it was this quiet when new!

Has granny turned up the boost? I noticed some coolant around the cap after running upped boost, but when presure testing coolant system or idling, no leaks. Everyone here kept saying it's a bad cap until a chunk came out of the head gasket. :oops: :lol:

Funnily enough I turned up the boost so that it would pull across the road like her little Polo/Audi A5 gasser did :twisted:
