Tbelt not tracking right
« on: May 07, 2008, 09:32:54 pm »
Ugh.

Getting my engine all back together, and now the tbelt won't track right.  Seems to be in the IP.  The belt is riding about 1/16" off of the IP pulley.  The bracket is tightly bolted to the engine.  The IP is tightly bolted to the bracket.  It's tracking about 3/16" away from where it used to (judging by the marks on the pulley).

Could it be, that I sandblasted and repainted the IP/motor mount bracket, and re painted it?

Any suggestions?

Was it tracking good before the work was done to it?

It may not be mounted in the exact same location. I seem to recall reading that you can slightly move the brackets a bit

it was tracking perfectly before I took the bracket off.  I guess I'll take it off tonight and try to figure out what's going on.

Yea I had the same problem. The thread posted above was how I fixed it. I just followed the tech service bulletin that VW posted, checked all brackets and pulleys with a straight edge, and replaced a stripped nut/bolt on the IP bracket. I also painted my IP bracket, I don't think that should be a problem.

ugh.

I think it's the ip bushing.  I started tearing it all apart again, and noticed about 1mm of play, maybe slightly less.  After turning it over several times the belt stays on, but sticks out about 1/16" over the ip pulley.

Next year, I'm putting a 16v in this car.  I've messed around with the diesel enough for a fun car, it doesn't have the dollar-hp factor I'd like, and I have all the wiring and fueling laying around for a full 16v swap.  The diesel will probably get thrown into a mk2 or something for a dd; I just hate this stuff that I'm not really sure what's going on.  I'd rather have a 16v and mess with wiring than mess with tearing my IP bracket off because it *might* be a reason my timing belt won't track right.

I'll drive it this summer, but if it still isn't thrilling me at the end of the summer, out with it.  I'm limited to two cars; if I wasn't, I'd own a 16v scirocco.

I now need to find my gear puller to get the ip pulley off.  Then I'll jack the engine up a little, and try to get the bracket off.  It frustrates me that I just put all this stuff back on the engine a couple weeks ago, and something isn't right.  Ugh.  I had visions of having this thing running in the next week or two.

Sorry about all the ***ing.

I'll post the TSB in this thread when I get home today. I've used a gear puller on the IP pulley before, it takes forever. Now, I just used a long screw driver to pry against the IP pulley from behind, then tap the screwdriver with a  rubber mallet and it pops right off.

Hmm, I couldn't find the tech bulletin. But all it said was this:

Push the left side of this bracket down, and the right side of the bracket up, and then tighten the bolts down.

Will try.  So, unbolt it from the motor mount bracket, loosen the 2 bolts, and move it, tighten them, and re bolt it to the mm bracket?

I just pulled the bracket off, rebolted it on, etc, and it still runs about 1/16" off of the pulley.  I'll go try the move the bracket trick.
