FEELER: Group Buy, 200+ hp Rods ALH and variants
« on: May 01, 2008, 11:10:52 am »
I am looking to buy some custom built conrods, and am wondering if any one else is interested. There is an 8-10 week wait for them to be made.

Basic price right now for them is about $190 a rod. That is only if I order 4; if I can get 4-5 people to order with me I am thinking we can get them for about $150 or less, making it one hell of a deal for custom rods.

AH...come on! Don't tempt me. I've got to overbore the block for the b3 mTDI build and now custom rods could be available...oye!!! That wouldn't be fair to the mk1. Should swap the motor from it into the b3 and then have the bigger motor for in the b3!

Though...I don't know if I want that much more power in the mk1.

Not if your power to weight ratio isn't in favor of it. Usable power is another story :)

They are goot for 30+ boost, and 8000RPM, as that is what i specified .
4340 steel billet rods heat treated etc. H-Beam.
I can confirm strength, but i would like 3-4 people to be ordering...better prices.

I would love to get in on this but even @ $150 ea that's spendy.
I mean Dave was able to get 200hp out of a stock bottom end..

I'm not racing mine by any means so not to sure if it would be worth it or not.
Not that I wouldn't LOVE to have them I must admit..

Well I am trying a couple different manufactures, one is offering around $650 for 4 if I can buy ~10 sets.

Dave was running a 1.9L IDI, I am not sure if these will fit, they are for a 1.9L DI.
A 1.9L DI is diffent, the cumbustion is happening in the piston, putting more force on the connection rods

i've seen two examples of north american rod companies selling chinese rods. Be wary of this! One of these rod sets failed, and the other one somehow wouldn't let one rod bolt thread out. Once it was torqued in, there was nothing that could be done to remove it!
I repair, maintain and modify VW's and BMW's.
Good work done at affordable rates. Welding and fabricating, too.

Thanks for the heads up Dr. D.
These are all American made, the guy that is making them guarantees them for 30+PSI 7000RPM at 19:1 compression...seemed a little hurt I questioned his product!

Def. Dr. D. thanks for the heads up on that. I wonder if we have seen the "same" product (not linked to any other current thread, vendor...etc. Totally different place) and I wondered the same thing.

Brad....it stinks...but you almost have to question the origin and make of products it seems these days. Look how slated some views are regarding just simple parts that no one would normally consider going outside the "OEM" brands ...

When you go into the "aftermarket" looking for custom rods, etc. etc. With all the "mills", "factories", and CNC machines (among others) out there in the world and the CHEAP product that can be had by buying overseas and elsewhere abroad...you def have to throw caution at even the aftermarket these days.

Some gobble it up and go for the cheaper chicken ...some really want to do it right. Its good to question it and that he stands behind his product. It also makes him all the more crediable in the end of all of it. I'm glad that he discussed it with you!

Now...if only I could justify and/or find the cash for such an investment right now for the mk1's mTDI motor! Sounds like a really decent deal Hmmm....
(thinks...oh great money tree...please grow)

Yes, it was good to ask.
The reason I could get these cheap is by a group buy, but alas I don't think it will happen, us TDIers just aren't willing to spend the money.

I was looking at another maker, and they did say on their site they imported some of thier rods.

I'd be a TDI'er that'd love to buy them...its more or less having the money or not vs. the other things I need to do. Therefore, I just can swing it at the moment.
Did you mention it over on TDIClub?

Yup, I mentioned it over there too, and got about the same responce, "If they were $X then ya".

I will see, I need a IP before I can really get these any way, but it would be nice!
