Jake found that 8000 to 9000 RPM was way too much when he missed a shift, but I'm wondering what is the safe max RPM for the 1.6 TD?
6800?
7000?
I know it will quit making power by then. think power is dropping after 5500 to 6000. When I have an accurate tach signal I will get it dyno'd.

Depends what you mean by "safe".
VW specs the max safe speed at around 5100 RPM... any other definition of safe would likely be pretty subjective... factoring in things like:
- how well balanced are all your parts ?
- how often do you intend hit this RPM ?
- how long do you want your engine to last ?

You don't rev a VW diesel, you increase the clatter.

i think the valve train is good for 6000 u just need a pump that can support it. the vw specs is just where the governor stops it

I realised after I posted my motor isn't exactly stock. it is
stock
 Machine work done by local shop that builds drag, dirt track, road race motors, and has done VW diesel work since VW came out with them. Bottom end should hold just fine. Think pistons/rod assemblies extreme spread was 3 grams. Did I mention it's built as a stock race motor with mechanical head?
Pump done by Giles, no need to say more.
The head is where I'm wondering,I'm thinking 6000 to 6200 max for peice of mind but would like some other input. Stock spec on mechanical springs and valves.Thinking my best bet will be to short shift and drive the torque, but I might be in between gears on the first trans ratio try. Discovered tonight my tach is screwy, so have to replace that. Imagine a VW electrical part sitting for 2 years and then not working.
How often will I hit this RPM? depends what the course calls for. I can be faster to bounce a rev limiter a few times than shift up and then back down. Once I figure out what gear it needs it may never see it.
How long to last? First thing I learned about racing. "speed is money, how fast do you want to go?" It might get freshend every year or 2, depending on what oil analysis has to say. Longer if it's fast enough at lower RPM in a higher gear. I am terribly competative tho

If I can trust my RPM signal generator and tach, with my motor and pump, looks like power is falling off pretty good around 5800 rpm. or maybe I'm involuntary lifting my foot cause I'm skerd to rev a diesel that high.
Dead past 5800 makes sence to me, now to gear accordingly.
Saturdays event we put on for the Mini Club was wet and short course, I missed fastest time of day by .028 seconds or so. Beat by a DSP Mini.
Sunday's was a bit longer and I found myself between 2nd and 3rd, and was 2.4 seconds off fastest time on 2 year old crap tires, still won my local FSP class tho.
Doubt I can adjust my gearing by next week for the Atlanta Doublecross Challenge and the National Tour the following week. :?

I'm working on the video's but no luck getting anyone to post them on the web. So far only available pictures of my car are on
http://killboy.blogspot.com/
May 7th weekly update blog a few pictures down the page. Look soon as they change the main page weekly. They take pictures and sell them mostly of people driving US129, The Dragon- 318 curves in 11 miles, and a few other motorcycle and car related events in the south east. He took several shots of my last run of the day, and is in their store date of May 3rd. Sucks it was such a wet, grimy day and I was using old crapy rims n tires.
Oh, and I spoke with the guys who say my motor was not available in the US in 83 or 84. Even after I showed them the bentley with the CY code, etc they say "VW used a T25 or little KKK, and never had a T3 on a US diesel, and the bentley I have is from UK, not US." hhhmm guess the VWoA part number in the bentley and ETKA at the dealer is wrong too. Not sure they even have read thru and understand the SCCA solo rule book either (ok, don't blame them too much on that one, it can be a pain)
Last word I had with them was "show me documentation the TD had a T25 cause I could use the boost sooner and can deal with the little extra heat for a wider power band" My friend with a stock 84 Jetta TD will be at the next event with the dealer window sticker from 84.
